Adeleine or Adeline?

Hello
I'm expecting my first baby and would like to call it "ad-a-Lynn".
I'm having trouble deciding on spelling as originally thought "Adeline" but am worried there would be confusion and it be pronounced "ad-a-line"
I like the spelling of "Adeleine" but have been warned it may be a bit complicated?
(I do not like the spelling Adelyn or the similar)

Also what nicknames would you give Adeleine?

Adeline = Ad eh lyne (like Caroline)
Adeleine = Ad eh laine

I would pronounce them the same as Grufalosfriend. Adelynne if you want the 'inn' sound but not keen on spelling it Adelyn? I'm not sure it's an actual name but maybe that doesn't matter.

I want the name to be pronounced like Madeleine but without the M. I just don't like the "y" in the traditional spelling! Thanks again

But some people pronounce Madeleine Mad-el-eine, not lyn. Like how some people say CaroLINE and some say CaroLYN. I think just spell it however you like and people will remember how it's pronounced. They will only need telling once if they're a normal, competent person.

I'd pronounce Madeleine as Mad-eh-LEN (with the emphasis on the last syllable).

If you want it pronounced Adalynn, then I'd probably write it like that.

Adalind? I think that's the German version. D is silent.

Adaline in German would be pronounced Ada-LEEN-eh. The boys' version is Adalin. Never heard of Adalind but would worry that people would pronounce the d.

Spell it how you want and tell people how to pronounce it. My name ends in 'or' and people always pronounce it as if its an 'a'. My dad hates this and is constantly correcting them but it doesn't really bother me.

Nicknames would probably be 'Addy' or 'Ada' (pronounced Aid-da)

I would pronounce it Ad-eh-line whichever spelling you used to be honest (and i would do the same with the various spellings on Madeleine)

Madeleine doesn't have an ynn sound imo, sorry (yes, I do speak French).
For the ynn sound I'd suggest going with Adelynn,
But I personally prefer Adeline.

I have an Adeline and pronounce it Ad-a-line. When people see the name written down then Ad-a-line is the pronunciation they all tend to go with. We did have an 'Ad-a-leen' once but never a 'Ad-a-lyn'. To be honest I would be tempted to spell it with the 'y' if you want the 'lyn' pronunciation, that way there would be no confusion. I suppose it depends on how annoying you would find correcting everyone if they said it wrong.

Oh and we call our Adeline 'Addie' generally. I also thought of Della if she wanted something more sophisticated when she was older.

If you want the LYNN sound then I would spell it Adalynn.

To me, Adeline is Ade-line and Adeleine is Ade-layne.

I would pronounce like this^^ but lots of names aren't pronounced how they look. If you want to spell it Adeline / Adeleine and pronounce it Adelynn there's nothing to stop you. It will only be mispronounced in doctors waiting rooms etc where people won't know your DD. You can tell everyone else how to pronounce it and I'm sure they will remember.

I feel for you, OP. I had a very similar situation with my dd's name in that the correct spelling and pronunciation isn't clear.
Personally, I couldn't make up a spelling, even if it would solve all pronunciation problems. I wanted dd to have a 'real' name, so I went with the correct spelling, and I just tell people how to pronounce it. She's only 8 months old, so I can't tell you if that was a good decision or not! I've only encountered one person who was familiar with both pronunciation and spelling. Everyone else is a bit but tbh we had loved her name for so long, and we were so delighted to finally use it that I couldn't give less of a monkey's.

Adeline is the correct spelling.

I have a 'friend' called this ;) (trying not to out myself too badly).

Her mother wanted her to be called 'Adder-leen'. That's how she pronounces it. But everybody pronounced it 'Adder-line' (like a line). So her mum started spelling it with three 'e' sounds when this 'friend' was 1, and it has been spelt the same way evers ence.

Lots and lots of people call this friend 'Ad-a-lynn' just because that's how they say it. I'd consider the 'Adelene' spelling as it avoids the 'line' pronunciation. There are a few about if you google them ...
