Girl's name to go with super short surname!

CharlyWooplus2 · 21/03/2016 15:20

I have a 2 letter Chinese surname, which means that I'd like to balance it out with a slightly longer first name. I already have 2 DS, both with traditional names (think Henry, Oliver type name).

But I'm really stuck and am going round in circles and have a feeling she'll be born and then have no name for ages! I'd love some of your thoughts on the following:

Theodora (Thea, Teddy)
Florence (so far my favourite, but another friend has literally just had a baby and called it Flora - I don't know her too well, but they'll end up in the same reception class, so feel a bit like I can't use it now??? Would welcome your thoughts on that too!)
Sylvie
Elodie (we were told DS2 was a girl at 26 weeks, following an accident I had at work. I hadn't planned on knowing the sex, but in the heat of the moment they asked if I wanted to know and I caved in - needless to say, he was a boy, haha! Elodie was the name picked out for that one, so does have some memories...)

I think I've just decided against Tabitha as I do love to shorten names and can only think of Tabby, who was my childhood cat. I love the name though.

Arghhh, please help! Thanks so much in advance!

I think it's fine to have Flora and Florence in the same class. They're quite different names to my mind, and besides you read a few threads on here and see it's very common for classes to have an Eve, Eva and Ava, or a Lily, Milly and Lilly etc.

I think they are all lovely names, although I like Theodora slightly less than the others, and even with a very short surname it feels a bit of a mouthful to me.

If you're prone to shortening names, Elodie might end up being known as Ellie, which depending on how you feel about that might put you off? (It would me - I shorten too and rule out many names because I dislike their shortenings).

If you're after other ideas too, how about Isadora, Beatrice or Celestine?

Florence is lovely and not too similar to Flora. Tabitha is great, and could be shortened to Beth?

Florence and Flora in the same class would be fine. How about:
Francesca
Alexandra
Gabriella
Susannah
Amelia

I think it very much depends on what the surname begins with as because it is such a short surname, the full name will read like the full name + surname as all one word and sometimes they can sound funny

Thanks everyone - this is so helpful to get everyone's thoughts - loving the suggestions, especially Beatrice...

Seven I think the abbreviation of Elodie would bug me too! Too far away from the original name...

2Off Soooo true! My surname begins with N and is barely pronounceable I have to be careful as it could be a new word, another reason why Florence works quite well. However, as I say, I do love to shorten so I think Flora would have definitely been one of the, and I like Flo less.... though I suppose it doesn't have to be shortened at all (I've never had a nickname billynomates)

I think I know what your surname is and was going to jump in with Nina for alliteration - but that wouldn't work at all.

Florence can get shortened to Flo, which wouldn't work either. Or Flossie.

I love Tabitha though.

I do love the name Tabitha, but...I had a cat called Tabitha Twitchett, Tabby for short, who I named when I was about 8. Can imagine my DPs laughing at me then choosing this at a later date for my DD.

But is this overthinking it?!!! I keep going back to it, it's mainly finding an alternative to Tabby that would be important to me - what about Bibi?

So maybe top 2 are Florence and Tabitha...

Swedish think you've guessed it, hah! Giggling at Flo+my surname - would spell years of torment for the poor child Grin

My DH has just walked in and said Elodie is his favourite still..he also likes Kitty.

Would Tamara be an alternative to Tabitha? Nn Tammy.

Love Tamara! Thank you! Smile

Alexandra and Charlotte are already taken by close family - we have a lot of girls! I was, until recently, the only one with boys so had a good run of choice. I always thought finding a girls name would be easy though. How wrong was I!!!

Katherine would be good and can shorten to Kitty, Kate, Katy etc. Do love Florence and Tabitha though. I don't think the cat thing matters but lots of people do mention it (I considered it for my dd- still on my list if I have another!)

Genevieve is my favourite of all of these.

For example Genevieve Po. It can shorten to Jenny as well.

How about Tabetha - that way it can shorten to Beth.
