Wondering what people think of Alister? Is it dated?

Also, how would you spell it?
Alister
Alistair

What do you think of these:
Alister David
Alister Jeffrey

Middle names are family names, DS1 has a family middle name too.

Thanks!

I've never seen it spelt Alister. That sounds likes completely different name. I would go for the traditional spelling

Jade1212 Mon 21-Mar-16 08:07:48

I much prefer Alistair, the other spelling always feels a bit off to me! Lovely name though

WizardOfToss Mon 21-Mar-16 08:11:26

Is Alister an alternative spelling? I'm not keen, I always thought of it as Alistair, which is is a lovely name.

DramaQueenofHighCs Mon 21-Mar-16 08:11:27

Ok I'm awkward - I'd spell it Alasdair or Alisdair! (Although out of the spellings you have given I prefer Alistair! smile )

Huxter13 Mon 21-Mar-16 08:38:42

Alasdair is the spelling I have on my list, but that's because it's the traditional Scottish spelling and think it goes better with my DS1 Murray!

Of your spellings I'd go for Alistair smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 Mon 21-Mar-16 08:40:35

Alistair.

It's nice.

MrsL2012 Mon 21-Mar-16 08:45:01

Thank you! I say Alistair and DH says Alister! So not a dated name then? There doesn't seem to be many about.

BowiesJumper Mon 21-Mar-16 08:46:38

Nice name but never seen it spelt alister. I would pronounce that differently too. Is that made up?

BikeRunSki Mon 21-Mar-16 08:52:09

I'd also go with Alasdair.

MrsL2012 Mon 21-Mar-16 08:53:48

I know one Alister but other than him I've not seen it spelled like that before - obviously DH disagrees!

MyBootsAreMuddy Mon 21-Mar-16 08:59:10

I love it, it was on our list but spelt Alasdair. Of your spelling's I'd go for Alastair as Alister just do sent look right to me as it looks like it should be pronounced A-list-er (as in celebrity a lister!).

MyBootsAreMuddy Mon 21-Mar-16 09:01:55

Sorry that should say of your spellings I'd go for Alistair.

MrsL2012 Mon 21-Mar-16 09:28:20

Myboots A-lister - haha that made me laugh! Definitely not a wannabe celeb!

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant Mon 21-Mar-16 10:02:27

I would spell it

Alastair

I know an adult, a 12 year old and a 5 year old.

Not a dated name. A classic like Matthew or Thomas.

Boutrosboutros Mon 21-Mar-16 10:08:38

We have an Alistair who's 2. Never met another his age but very pleased with it - nice solid name and good nicknames (he gets Al and Ally).

Sophronia Mon 21-Mar-16 10:17:31

I'd spell it Alastair. I like it.

OneMagnumisneverenough Mon 21-Mar-16 10:21:34

I like it but please don't spell it with a d.

My BIL spells it Alister, we've used it as a middle name for one of ours but went with Alastair, so that would be my preferred spelling but they are all legitimate.

OneMagnumisneverenough Mon 21-Mar-16 10:22:59

And from your options I like Alastair David the best.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles Mon 21-Mar-16 12:51:23

I know an Alastair (named for the cricketer) and an Alistair. Like both spellings - not a name I hear very often.

MitzyLeFrouf Mon 21-Mar-16 13:21:43

And not forgetting Alasdhair.

Far too many ways to spell this name. Plus they're always a big smug I find.

Sgoinneal Mon 21-Mar-16 14:03:41

Alasdhair is just wrong, wrong, wrong. Gives me the heave.

Alasdair original spelling but Alistair more popular. The former would have been dc2's name if a boy, think it's a strong name but not 'harsh'.

MitzyLeFrouf Mon 21-Mar-16 14:07:56

Wikipedia gives the following as possible spellings

Alasdair, Alasdhair, Alastair, Alastar, Alaster, Alastor, Alaisdair, Alaistair, Alaister, Aleister, Alestair, Alester, Alisdair, Alistair, Alistaire, Alistar, Alister, Allastair, Allaster, Allastir, Allester, Allistair, Allistaire, Allistar, Allister, Allistir, Allysdair, Allystair, Allyster, Alysdair, Alysdare, Alystair, Alyster, Aldair

shock
grin

Sgoinneal Mon 21-Mar-16 14:09:23

Can't possibly comment Mitzy but I wish there was a vomit emoticon for most of those. grin

Love the name but it doesn't half get butchered in 'alternative' spellings.

MitzyLeFrouf Mon 21-Mar-16 14:12:50

I think Alistair and Alasdair look right. The rest of them need to take a long hard look in the mirror. Especially you Allysdair.
