I love this name, have heard it a few times but am still unsure what it's short for, if anything? So, do you like it and do you know what it's short for?

Prunella maybe?

I quite like Nella, prefer Nell but I like that it isn't a run of the mill name

Fenella.

Nelly.

I don't know what it's short for but I think it's lovely, and I would have thought it could easily stand alone.

Petronella.

I read a book called The Miniaturist and the main character is Petronella and known as Nella.

ladygracie · 12/03/2016 23:15

It can be short for Antonella which is Italian.

ladygracie · 12/03/2016 23:16

And I do like it.

Petronella from The Miniaturist.

The worst book I've read in a long time. Seriously, what a load of old nonsense that was.

It was so shit I left a one star review on Amazon.

Don't buy The Miniaturist people!

My grandma's name, I love it. She was Leonella on her birth certificate but always went by Nella. (She was Italian btw, not that it really matters)

I thought it was unadulterated shite as well Mitzy. Don't understand the praise for it.

Nelly can be short for Helen.

centigrade451 · 14/03/2016 17:23

Nella means 'in' or 'inside the' or 'in the' in Italian.

My nickname in school because it's my maiden name backwards Grin

I love Nell, Nella I don't know... Makes me think of Nutella and vanilla, not necessarily bad!

In theory, Nell can be a nn for any name beginning with "El", such as Eleanor, because it comes from people saying "mine Eleanor" (back in 17th century and before) which got shortened to "mine El" or "my Nell".

And Nella is just a variant on Nell.

So you could pick any "El" name - Eleanor, Elinor, Ellen, Eloise, Elodie, Elena, Elspeth...

Helen and Helena also work, as "mine Helen" also became Nell.

The names with "nella" in them work too of course.

Nell and Nella both lovely IMO. Usually short for Eleanor/Elinor or Helen in this country. I know lots of Nells for some reason and all are great strong women Smile
