In theory, Nell can be a nn for any name beginning with "El", such as Eleanor, because it comes from people saying "mine Eleanor" (back in 17th century and before) which got shortened to "mine El" or "my Nell".

And Nella is just a variant on Nell.

So you could pick any "El" name - Eleanor, Elinor, Ellen, Eloise, Elodie, Elena, Elspeth...

Helen and Helena also work, as "mine Helen" also became Nell.

The names with "nella" in them work too of course.

Nell and Nella both lovely IMO. Usually short for Eleanor/Elinor or Helen in this country. I know lots of Nells for some reason and all are great strong women
