What are your thoughts on Ellis for a girl?

I love the name as know a lovely lady of that name but sure how much that is skewing my judgement.

Failing that, Rowan?

AuntieStella Thu 03-Mar-16 18:15:18

Ellis is far too much a boy's name.

Rowan is lovely.

Much too much a boys name. What about Eilis?
I like Rowan, it's always been very female to me anyway.

BalaBot Thu 03-Mar-16 18:22:05

This was my fear. I know no boys and have only ever known this one lady.

Oh dear!

Thumbs up for Rowan smile

IHeartKingThistle Thu 03-Mar-16 18:23:22

I've taught one. It's quite cute.

BalaBot Thu 03-Mar-16 18:24:28

I assume Eilis is pron eye-lish?

Is it a Scottish or Irish name? Second generation of both so could at a push justify that.

Nice suggestion, thanks

Ellis was one of the names we had chosen for a dd but didn't use. I think it works for either.

BalaBot Thu 03-Mar-16 18:25:29

Oh some positive ones too, this is good, thank you

A no from me, for both Ellis and Rowan. Love them both for a boy, but not for a girl.

RubySparks Thu 03-Mar-16 18:26:41

I know two girls and one boy, it's more a girl's name to me!

Sophronia Thu 03-Mar-16 18:27:24

I love Rowan for a girl, not so keen on Ellis

Muskey Thu 03-Mar-16 18:30:15

Ellis Peters was the lady who wrote the Cadfael stories. I think of it much like Frances/Francis and Lesley. I do think rowan is a boys name with rowann(e) as the female equivalent. I really like both names by the way

BalaBot Thu 03-Mar-16 18:30:52

Blimey, hadn't even clocked Rowan is also a boys name.....

Stars1 Thu 03-Mar-16 18:32:20

Love Ellis for a girl, I have a boy Rowan but spelt slightly different.

BalaBot Thu 03-Mar-16 18:33:05

Hooray, more likes, thank you!

Meeep Thu 03-Mar-16 18:34:04

It is a bit too similar to Ellie for me.
Nice though.

AntiquityReRises Thu 03-Mar-16 18:36:22

Ellis is lovely! And we had Rowan on our girls list.

Solobo Thu 03-Mar-16 18:37:45

I love it for a girl. No so much for a boy.

Sgoinneal Thu 03-Mar-16 18:40:02

Ellis is far more a girls' name for me, know a few and like it a lot.

Sgoinneal Thu 03-Mar-16 18:41:07

And Eilis/Eilish is ay-lish, also lovely

lexyjay Thu 03-Mar-16 18:41:50

I've known both boys and girls called ellis. I think its a great unisex name

villainousbroodmare Thu 03-Mar-16 18:41:59

I really like both Ellis and Rowan for girls.

Jbck Thu 03-Mar-16 18:48:39

I know two Ellis one's early 40s the other is 10, both female? I really like it.

I like Rowan too but prefer Ellis

HitsAndMrs Thu 03-Mar-16 18:52:10

I think it is lovely!! But if DD was a boy she would have been called Jesse.

chachaboom Thu 03-Mar-16 19:02:43

In Wales it would only ever be a boy's name (also a surname).
