Would this be mean?

I have always loved the name William. I was convinced since the age of 10 that I would call my son William. However, I have married a man with the surname Wallace.
Would this just be too mean?

I went to school in the 90s with a Tom Jones, Toni Hadley and James Dean so people do do it. But I'm not sure why. It must be pretty tiresome going through your whole life pre-emptively laughing at the inevitable "joke" you know is coming.

I think it's mean.

Millions of names to choose from, why choose the one boring name that when coupled with your surname will give your child nothing but annoying comments and jokes throughout their life?

DH has vetoed it anyway. I don't think I could be so cruel. Although in saying that I did go to school with someone called Annette Curtain so at least it wouldn't be quite as mean as that.

I know a guy near me called Ken Dodd. As far as I know, he doesn't own a set of tickle sticks.

Not mean, exactly. Kids won't know who William Wallace is until they're 9 or 10 (unless you're in Scotland I guess). By which time they'll be used to the name as your son's name and just think 'oh, cool, same name.'

But I do think it would be a bit strange and silly.

I know a William Wallace! He's in his 50s but I have known him for ages and nobody ever comments on his name. We are in Scotland too so obviously his parents knew what they were doing but it's not an issue for him, it's a nice name.
