Hi, I love the name Ottilie but husband says it's not a name! ( babycenter disagrees :) ) just wondered what people thought of it. Also is it spelled with two tt's or one? The original suggestion had one but babycenter had two. Can't find it anywhere else.

I also like Neive but not sure which spelling to go with. I like the one I've typed but can mainly find Niamh and Neve. Concerned the one I like is around because people can't spell and is not a true spelling.

All help and alternative suggestions welcome.

We are also struggling with boys names!

It is definitely a name. I'm not sure how I feel about it - quite like it I think. Also not sure how to spell it.

I really like Neive but I would spell it Niamh. I've seen Neve and Nieve but never Neive actually.

I don't know what kind of alternatives you're looking for but maybe:

Alternative 'unusual ie names':
Hannalie, Amberley, Coralie, Natalie, Persephone, Siddalee (sp?), Cassidy, Verity

Alternative 'Celtic' names:
Aoife, Aisling, Maeve, Caoimhe, Ffion, Fionnhuala, Morvern, Eilidh, Catriona, Fiona, Roisin

Alternative 'O' names:
Orla, Odette, Odille, Ocean, Olga, Olive, Olivia, Ophelia, Octavia, Oriana, Opal

Alternative 'N' names:
Nina, Nadia, Nadine, Nia, Nyah, Natasha, Naomi, Natalia, Nora, Nancy, Noelle, Noa, Neriah, Nesta

Thank you manic.

Love ophelia, Orla and Olivia.

I thought spelling nieve was how you spelled naive, oops. My main worry is she'll get nicknamed naive. My spelling is not great hence I don't want to spell a name in an unaccepted way in case people just think I didn't bother to check.

Absolutely legit. Ottoline is too, which seems a bit more substantial...

I think Ottilie is horrible.
Definitely spell Niamh as Niamh, not Neive.

I like Niamh and Olivia. Not keen on Ottilie.

My DD is Ottilie! It is two tts and is pronounced Ot tea leah. It's a slightly posh old German name, feminine for Otto. DD named after my Great Nan.

My great nan was called Ottilia
( Otti ) for short and she was from Cologne in Germany.
My nan was called Albertine which she hated and when moved to UK after the war she was referred to as Tina :)
It's a real name and even if it wasn't then what's the problem as long as you like it, it's good to be different.

I don't like Ottilie. It sounds too "trying to be different" IMO. And the funny thing is I've come across a few Ottilie's (invariably nicknamed Otti) in the past few months, all under about 9 months old...

Niamh is perfectly fine but spell it properly as Niamh if you're going to use it.

I love Ottilie but its becoming quite popular I think, it would put me off using it!

Ironically I'm not keen on Otti, our DD gets called tiddles, Tpot, or we just knock the O off and call her ttilie which looks weird written down. We do have the advantage of now living in Germany, so spelling and pronunciation isn't a problem. I've seen a few top 10 German name lists and it's on all of them as being classic and beautiful, one said it has an air of beautiful Victorian lace about it. Needless to say I love it! I had it picked out (because of my great Nan) since I was 10.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions.

Funny reading maryrobinson :)
Hadn't thought about it from a class or trying too hard point so interesting comments and worth bearing in mind. The intention was never to be out there different, I just liked it so interesting that's how it might be perceived.

My two DSs both have regular but not common names so was trying to match that for this one. Still LOVE Ottilie but as Dh still feels hates it and from feed back I'll push for Niamh. Still love that name and though I don't love the spelling think you're right to go traditional. Thanks for the advice. It's been really appreciated to get honest feedback xx
