I'm pretty sure it's pronounced Eh-vah-lyn

Not as unusual as you may think. It's actually become pretty popular in the past couple of years.

It can be pronounced eh-vah-lyn or ee-vah-lyn, or ev-lin come to think of it so don't pick if the 'wrong' pronunciation would irritate you.

This link says it was the 31st most popular girls' name in 2014, and I'd imagine it went higher again in 2015.

My baby DD is Evelyn so obviously I love it! We pronounce it eh-vah-lyn. I've heard it is quite popular but we haven't come across any others yet.

Lovely. Friend just named their DD that. However they did have to put a message online about a week later saying how it was pronounced - they'd obviously had a lot of people asking or mispronouncing it!

My instinct was to say Eve-lin, but I half suspected that was wrong. That's how they are pronouncing it, so I imagine they'd had a lot of people saying Eh-va-lyn.

Quite like the whole Eleanor/Elinor debate.

Beeauuuuutiful name.

Ah! I thought it was virtually unheard of nowadays. I guess with a lovely name like that it's only a matter of time...

I have a 7 year old Evelyn. She's an Eh va lin. Though people often pronounce it the other way.

I like it - quite unusual but I believe becoming more popular.

I prefer Evv a lin rather than Ee va lin.

Taught one recently who had moved from England - she was most put out because everybody pronounced the wrong way!

It's a lovely name. I also like Evelina. Eve/Eva/Ava/Evie are popular at the moment.

A friend of mine has just had an Evelyn.

Nooooo. It is not unusual. She will be another eve. One third of the girls in dds class are named a variant of eve. It's this generations sarah. Horribly confusing. Many of the mothers are my friends and wish they had chosen something else due to the crazy popularity.

My cousin's 2-year old is called Evelyn, and she specifically said it was to be pronounced Ev-a-lyn in the announcement.

I don't think an ev-a-lyn will end up with an eve or evie nickname. Different sounds.

mrsmugoo · 20/01/2016 20:23

I love it, but if it were me I'd prefer the eev-lyn pronunciation.

My Evelyn is 11 (we pronounce it Eh-vah-Lyn). She shortens it to Ally (because she thinks Evie is too popular).

It was quite an unusual name when we choose it (outside the top 100), but has since become much more popular.

Yes though we have found that semantics of pronunciation aside by 9 they are all called Eve by their pals. And there are so many of them!

My granddaughter is called Evelyn.

People do try to call her Evie and get a withering look from DSD, as she hisses Ev...its Ev - a - lyn.

Well I know a few ev-ah-lyns of varying generations and none of them are known as Eve, a couple are known as Ev though.

I have such a soft spot for this name as I had a great aunt Evelyn - it was pronounced Evlin, but we mostly called her Aunty Ev - and she was the sweetest soul, so pleased to see it making a come back Smile

Report
Sparklycat · 20/01/2016 20:55

I've always liked it but it is extremely popular now
