Nat as in short for Nathanial? I love Nate. Nat is like a gnat, not very nice.

Nati is too close to nazi

ha yes it is like gnat isn't it! DP won't go for Nathanial so it would need to be just Nat.

Nati is too girly i think.

maybe Nat doesn't stand well enough on its own.

Nat short for Nathan?

Nat seems girly, because all of the Nats I have known were Natalies.

How about Nate?

DS2 went to nursery with a Nathaniel that was often shortened to Nat or Natty by his parents. I never thought anything of it.

I think I'd probably convince your DH to go with Nathaniel as the formal name, but he can shorten it to Nat/Natty for daily use. It just gives more options to your DS when he's an adult.

My partner, for example, is glad his parent called him the full version of his name even if they always used the shortened one. He decided to go with the full version when he left home for university and now only his family ever use the shortened version. I can't imagine calling him the shortened version at all, even though I hear his parents using it (although they also try to use the full version because he prefers it).

I know a Nate, who is actually a Nathaniel. I think it's a great name. Also really like Nat.

Good name. I'd use as a nn for Nathan.

I love Nathaniel but unfortunately I really don't like Nat as a shortening. Nate is better though. Or what about Nathan? It was the lack of good shortening that put us off using this name for one of our DSs!

Similar sounding names might include Daniel or Lionel? Or Emmanuel? I always liked the last of these but wasn't quite brave enough to use it!

Good Luck!

Always disliked Nathan or Natty or Nat or Naggy as I know one is called.

We use Naty baby wipes, so not a great connotation for me unfortunately.

I have a Nathaniel nn Nate. We met an adult Nathaniel who goes by Nathan, said it was odd to find someone else with his birth certificate name.

I'd go with the long name for BC, but then always use Nat.

I prefer Nate to Nat, but would use Nathaniel on the BC, like other posters...

I too think of girls as Nat is often short for Natalie.

And Natty is too close to Nutty imo.

I like Nathan though. Not shortened.

How about Matt (hew) instead?
