Boys name inspiration

We are having a boy, our first DC. I appear to like almost no names. Or, I like them when other people use them, but won't use them myself. I've lots of rules that I made up too.

Some names we both like but can't use:

William
Samuel
Alexander
George
Duncan
Harris
Joseph
Rory

Names that are on one or other of our lists so far:
Cory
Murray
Magnus
Zachary
Jack
Joshua
Ethan
Innes

Can't begin with an L (alliteration looks wrong with surname) and would prefer at least 2 syllables. Even of the ones I like, I can't actually imagine my son being called any of them. I don't want something too unusual. We're Scottish, but doesn't have to be a particularly Scottish name. I'm over 30 weeks now and am no further on than when I was at 15 weeks except now I can't use the girls names I liked!

Help......

You might just decide that he looks like a (insert random name here) so don't panic.

We are in NE Scotland and I know 7 Zachary/Zack's under 5 so if popularity bothers you I'd avoid that.

Our boys names were:
Ruairidh
Evan
Jacob
Bradley
Eli

From your list I like Murray and Magnus.

Stuart?

Another bunch of nice names but most of which we can't use. I think Jacob and Eli are maybe both a bit too biblical for us.

Shitebag interesting re so many Zachs. I don't know any from the names my friends have used, but as we aren't involved in nursery/school etc yet, I can't gauge genuine popularity.

FatWalda they are probably my two favourites so far. Only thing is, OH wants to spell it Moray (like the Firth) and I know anyone not from Scotland will pronounce it Maw-ray. Like the eel.

OH not sure about Magnus yet

Ahhhh why is it so hard.

I like Alasdair and Lachlan, but neither worked for us.

It's not Scottish, but how about Conrad?

Report

Or Wreford, from the Scottish side of my family.

I can't quite get excited about Alasdair - knew lots of them growing up, which shouldn't matter of course, but just feels a bit familiar. Lachlan doesn't work with our surname. I think OH may have already said no to Conrad. There have been so many conversations I can't remember! It doesn't immediately jump out but I don't hate it either, so will mull over it for a bit and see if I warm to it. Thank you.

I don't know why I'm so resistant to nearly every name I hear. I don't meet people (adults or babies) with these names and think "ugh what a bad name" so maybe I'm just being insanely PFB!

Please do keep suggesting things, there must be some names out there I've not discarded yet Grin.

I like Magnus. It's on our list for DC3 if it is a boy.

What about Douglas? I used to know a lovely one.

Thanks everyone. Problem is there's just as many Scottish names I'm not fond of as anything else - maybe even more so. Craig, Logan, Neil, Ross, Gregor, Brodie, Robbie, Lachlan etc. Also not a big fan of David, Peter, Alan, Ian etc, all a bit too pedestrian for my taste I think. Can't use Callum, Arran, Luke, Jamie, Thomas, Jacob, Elliott, Euan or Ellis. Quite like Douglas but think OH veto'd it - will check. I also like Marley but to me it's a bit golden lab. Nairn is ok. I will put it on the long list, but was at school with one and that bothers me! Murdo I will dwell on.

Damp, I like both those too but think Jack with our surname will sound a bit 2nd-rate detective! Joshua I like, I think OH is warming to it.

Hobby, most of the names you've listed have quite a biblical connotation which isn't really us, although lots of them are lovely names!

Wanker (sorry!) why spelt that way out of interest? I have definitely seen both and know in Scotland it would be ok, but hearing my child named after an ugly eel would drive me mad...

It's too hard! I am going to name him Boy.

It's better spelled Moray because that is the way the place is spelled. It reminds me of beaches and countryside and makes me imagine a rugged boy/man with a bit of colour in his cheeks and a twinkle in his eye. Which is odd as the only Moray I know/knew was a girl (very good looking, clever and sporty). On the other hand, Murray reminds me of a fat middle aged man who drinks too much. No idea why though :)

I was at school with a Nairn too but didn't know him that well.

Cairn? DS2 was almost that but where we lived it would have been pronounced kay-rin (not good :( ) he ended up Ciar (pronounced the same as Keir but is Gaelic)

We also almost went for Blaven for DS1 but chickened out but I still like it.

Munro?
Struan?
Tiernan?

Harris?

I feel your pain somewhat OP as with DS1 I was appalled at the boys names as we hardly liked any compared to girls. Plus so many in the 'boys' section of the book I have are traditionally girls names (like Shirley) so feel somewhat cheated reading through the boys half of the book!Hmm Finally settled on one that is mentioned aboveWink

Now I'm pregnant again and it'll probably be another boy (based on DS having 4 other boy cousins!). Dreading having to choose another boys name!
