I've got a rather large list of girls names that we both quite like, I'd like to narrow it down a bit. There's not so many on our boys list it seems much harder! What's your honest opinions on these names?

Feel free to add some suggestions as we haven't found the one we both love!

Girls ( we like pretty names but ones that will work well on baby and adult so nothing too cutesy)

Abigail
Chloe
Emily
Eva
Erin
Ellie
Emma
Edith
Felicity
Imogen
Lily
Pippa
Violet
Zara
Zoe

Boys

Alfie
Elliot
Hugo
Oscar
Jack
Lucas

Thanks

I like both of your lists, with Elliot and Jack my favourite of the boys, and Erin and Zoe best of the girls.

There are soooooo many Ellies around atm.

I wasn't sure if Ellie was still popular, it was on our list 11 years ago if we had a girl. I'd rather avoid massively popular names! Is Jack still as popular as it was a few years ago?

It depends on how popular is 'too popular' for you.
In 2013, the following names from your lists were all in the top 20 for England and Wales:
Emily, Lily, Chloe (and Evie, Ella)
Jack, Oscar, Alfie

And these were top 30:
Eva
Lucas

My favourites from your lists are Zara, Zoe and Elliot.
Other suggestions: Tabitha and Edward

My favourites from your girls list are Imogen, Lily and Eva. Lily and Eva are both popular but depends whether this bothers you or not. My DD has a top 10 name and to date we only know one other child with the same name and we live in London...

From your boys list I like Alfie, Hugo and Oscar. Hugo was on the shortlist for DS due in 3 weeks but we've narrowed it down now to two other names.

Favourite girls would be Erin, Zoe and Emma. I really like Abbie but not a fan of Abigail so would depend on if you were using the full version or not.

For the boys it would be Jack or Lucas for me, but if you want to avoid really popular names you probably can't use Jack.

I love the name Emma. Classic, timeless and not actually that common without being too out there.

I love Elliot for a boy.
Other boys names, Tristan, Dylan

Abigail - love it. My sister's an Abigail and I've always been a bit jealous
Chloe - like it
Emily - like it but it seems very unexciting
Eva - really like it
Erin - really like it
Ellie - not keen at all though I do like Eleanor, Elodie, Eloise, Ella etc
Emma - it's ok
Edith - quite like it. Edie is a cute nn
Felicity - love it
Imogen - like it
Lily - meh, it's ok
Pippa - like it
Violet - it's ok
Zara - love it
Zoe - quite like it

Boys

Alfie - like it
Elliot - love it - quite unusual too
Hugo - not keen
Oscar - love it
Jack - love it
Lucas - like it

From your lists I'd go for Zara or Abigail and Elliot

Abigail - I really like this name

Chloe - Too "soft", not much substance

Emily - okay, but if you want to avoid too-popular names steer clear of it

Eva - Ava sounds nicer IMO

Erin - okay, but nothing special

Ellie - this sounds like a nickname for something longer (elena, eleanor, ellis?)

Emma - no "personality" in this one

Edith - of all the old names which could be called "granny chic", this one is NOT granny chic. avoid!!!

Felicity - a sweet, sugary name; very cheerful but also quite popular these days

Imogen - ugly!!!! Sorry, ive never liked this name

Lily - Far too common; only name your kid this if you want her to be "Lily surname initial" for her entire school life.

Pippa - I dislike this name, but it can be used as a nickname for Philippa, which I think is pretty

Violet - shrinking violet comes to mind. A weak name.

Zara - A very strong name; the complete opposite of violet! I think of a headstrong, powerful girl.

Zoe - This is a unique name; I think it can be powerful or cutesy depending on the person. I think the child will give this name her own personality.

Alfie - far too cutesy to be a full name. If you want this name go with Alfred, and use Alfie as a nickname if you want him to retain some semblance of dignity when he's 40 years old.

Elliot - A weak name imo, very flimsy sounding

Hugo - this is a clumsy kid's name

Oscar - this is okay

Jack - Classic, generic but also quite nice??

Lucas - This is okay
