What do people think of Abigail?

So struggle with girls names. I've just been playing this one around in my head today. I never see it suggested on these boards. Why is that? Is it a bit meh? Has it been over done? Honest opinions welcome Smile

Lovely. Do you have ideas for a middle name?

Pretty name but I don't like Abby.

It was very popular 15-20 years ago, but I haven't come across any recently. I love Abi as a nn

We were thinking of middle name after grandparent. Which was Sylvia. I quite like that too, but am worried it's a bit trendy atm.

Ps I am a teacher and there must be five Abbie/Abby/Abigail's in every year

I like it. And I like Abby/Abbie too. But I am 50.

LOVE IT!!

Really pieceofpurplesky? That's annoying. I assumed Sylvia would be the more popular of the two. I have a really 80s name and I hated that there were a million of us at my school. Especially when I got in trouble for other people's desk graffiti Grin

I like it. No Abigails or Abbys at the school where I work!

I like it. Can't use it though as one of my close friends has an Abigail. It's quite a common name around here.

Much prefer Sylvia to Silvie.
Especially if Sylvie is pronounced Sil-Vie, with the stress on the second syllable.
Abigail is a lovely name

We have one, never shortened, we still love it years on.

Has several meanings, one of which, the Hebrew one, is fathers joy - particularly apt for us as we didn't think she was going to make it through pregnancy.

We didn't have a name at all, didn't know the sex, until the day she was born. One of the nurses gave us a name dictionary. We hadn't thought about names at all as there was a lot going on.

We rarely meet another one - no others in school, Brownies etc., etc..

I really love the meaning lavendersun. Having slept on it I have to say I am really warming to it more and more.

The popularity thing bothers me slightly, though it seems (by the highly scientific sampling of this thread) to be regional. I bet it's popular where I live though.

I like 'highly scientific sampling' OP, purely as a scientist you know!

Odd isn't it, we rarely meet one - haven't had another one in three schools.

Obviously my inner pedant must correct 'Father's joy .. I am baking for the school cake sale, just what I need after getting up at 0430 yesterday and finally sitting down at 2030.

I know lots but it's fine as a middle name after Sylvia which is charming.
