Asher as a boy's name?

Hi, I have recently met 2 baby Ashers! Never heard the name before, but it really appeals to me. Looked it up and it's a Biblical name, one of Joseph's brothers.

What are people's reactions to it? Different but too different?

It was the only boy's name I liked when pregnant with DD 17 years ago. I still like it, I've never met a real Asher though.

I know a 36-year-old Asher (male). (The son of an old friend of my mum). He's the only one I've met. I like the name.

I thought it was an Indian name... I must be going mad. I like it but don't like "Ash" as a nickname so wouldn't choose it myself.

A former colleague had a ds called Asher. I quite liked it.

The Indian name Asha is for girls, I think.

Ash is quite a nice nickname.

I once worked with an Asher. He was a bit of a hedonistic womaniser. Quite glamorous though and I have always liked the name probably because of that.

I have a little Asher :) Had a 100% positive reaction. It also means blessing in Hebrew. Lots of positivity about Asher in the Torah. We wanted a Hebrew name and loved the fact that it's not common but is also very accessible.

We have an Asher. So far we've had a couple of looks when we've pointed out that he's a boy... Including one at a church who protested that it was a girl's name & looked positively offended when we said it was biblical. Mostly the reaction has been positive though.

I love it. We struggled to find names we both liked, given that I liked the more 'patriarchal' biblical names like Abraham, Moses, etc. & DH prefers the more common Matthew/David types. It was a good compromise for us. Unusual, easy to pronounce & spell & none of the 'old man' connotations that DH objected to with most of my suggestions!

Oh, I really like it but I'd hate it getting shortened to Ash (which I think would happen) My fictional sons are Asher and Jesse (but we also live in New York)

Great name from the Old Testament. My friend named her son Asher. Lovely name.

Written down it's clearly male but as Asha is more common than Asher and they sound identical (at least they do in my accent) I can see how there could be some confusion. Don't think it would be a big problem though.

Alternatives could be Ashton or Archer but they don't have the same soft biblical vibe.
