Too similar to dad's name?

If dad was called Edward, would it put you off the name Frederick? It's been my favourite name forever but I worry that if Freddie becomes a Fred as he gets older, they would sound silly together?

I wouldn't not choose that name on the basis of a 'maybe' nickname.
Does your partner go by Eddie at all? Because Freddie seems to be more of a nickname than Fred or at least until he's in his teens.
It wouldn't be much of an issue anyway except in family events as little Fred's friends would call your partner Fred's Dad or Mr x whilst your partners friends would call him Ed/Eddie/Edward or whatever they call him and would rarely see DS (I assume).

If you really like the name I think it's very doable.

If it was Edward and Edwin I'd say differently as they are both likely to be shorted to Ed, but Frederick and Edward both have a few nicknames they could go with. Perhaps if little Frederick becomes Fred your partner will decide to less confuse things he'll be known as Eddie or just Edward.

That was a ramble sorry, hope that makes sense.

Short version: go for it. :)

No I like it!
I like a child's name having links to parents name, even though in your case it would be on a off chance depending on what nn were used.
There is no reason why DS can't be Frederick!
