styleblazer.com/124310/20-female-names-well-never-see-again/

really? see half of these on here all the time!

OP posts:
AuntieStella · 20/09/2014 22:13

Any chance you could be kind and C&P the names? The link keeps crashing for me. Thanks!

hollie84 · 20/09/2014 22:15

Yep, there are loads of Beatrices and Marthas around!

Think they might be right of Mildred and Phylis though.

Wishfulmakeupping · 20/09/2014 22:16

Agree OP I see lots of these names too- maybe more popular here and not used in America

Artandco · 20/09/2014 22:17

It includes really common names!

I know at least one Ethel, agatha, Martha, Eleanor and rose under 5 years.

MrsBungle · 20/09/2014 22:19

There are 3 Martha's, an agatha and an Eleanor in dd's y1 class.

Ludways · 20/09/2014 22:24

It's an American article, these names may not be popular there, more do here.

Hulababy · 20/09/2014 22:24

From the link

Blanche
Myrtle
Ethel
Barbara
Mildred
Agatha
Phyllis
Beatrice
Marge
Ruth
Gretchen
Gertrude
Martha
Opal
Rose
Eleanor
Marlene
Gladys
Josephine
Ilene

EvilRingahBitch · 20/09/2014 22:25

The only female name that I think we can definitely positively 100% rule out making a comeback is Fanny. Though it's possible that. JK Rowling may have permanently made Myrtle unusable.

WhereAreMyGlasses · 20/09/2014 22:28

My name is on there, and it is true I hvent met any children under the age of 10 with my name but it might come back as it is not that old fashioned or odd! at least I dont think so

AuntieStella · 20/09/2014 22:30

Thanks!

Of those, the ones I know in RL are Martha, Agatha, Rose, Eleanor (loads of them!) and Beatrice.

gunnsgirl · 20/09/2014 22:32

I love Ruth though. Classic. Timeless. And I've known some lovely Ruths.

gamescompendium · 20/09/2014 22:33

I love that all the responses are 'what a load of bollocks, loads of these names are popular'. Someone didn't do any research whatsoever.

SevenZarkSeven · 20/09/2014 22:34

Ruth?
Rose?
I know a little Marlene!

Also after writing that clicked the link

What a nasty article Confused
Putting pictures of people up and saying their names is fucking awful? Weird and mean really.

hollie84 · 20/09/2014 22:35

I know young Myrtle, Agatha, Beatrice, Martha, Eleanor and Josephine

Lily Allen's daughter is called Ethel I think

I reckon Blanche, Gertrude, Opal, Marlene (like Dietrich) and Ilene might make a comeback.

And Ruth is pretty classic.

2kidsintow · 20/09/2014 22:37

I've recently taught a Beatrice, a Martha and a Eleanor.

LetticeKnollys · 20/09/2014 22:40

Rose Confused

Rose is number 68 in the UK for girls this year according to this link.

morethanpotatoprints · 20/09/2014 22:42

I know small / young children called Ruth, Rose, Beatrice and Eleanor. They aren't babies but all under 10

AveryJessup · 20/09/2014 22:42

Martha, Ruth and Eleanor are all pretty names and in use among the preschool-aged girls I know at least. I also have a friend whose 3-year old daughter is named Josephine, although they are not from an English-speaking country.

Gladys, Agatha and Mildred are admittedly dire though...

nooka · 20/09/2014 22:47

Loving the idea that Princess Beatrice might have suffered growing up with such a mainstream name. They didn't have to look very far for a name that really might have been a bit difficult to carry - if anyone might want to think about royal names that stand out then surely Eugenie would be the one to pick?

SevenZarkSeven · 20/09/2014 22:47

Maybe name popularity is less cyclical in the states?

TBH it's not going to translate anyway is it we're completely different countries Grin

MrsCakesPrecognition · 20/09/2014 22:52

Stupid article. She's basically plucked some names out of the air without any research. A quick check of the ONS data for baby girls names given in 2013 show that most of the listed names are still in current use, with 3 being in the top 100 names.

Myrtle - 6 girls called this in 2013
Ethel - 10
Barbara - 26
Agatha - 52
Phyllis - 4
Beatrice - 583
Marge - (surely a shortening of Margaret - 77)
Ruth - 107
Gretchen - 6
Gertrude - 4
Martha - 756 (73rd most popular name in England and Wales)
Opal - 6
Rose - 823 (68th most popular name in E&W)
Eleanor - 1039 (59th most popular name in E&W)
Marlene - 6
Gladys - 6
Josephine - 187
Ilene - (typo for Eileen? - 28)

Sophronia · 21/09/2014 01:17

Beatrice, Martha, Rose, Eleanor, Josephine and to some extent Ruth are already back!

Yes she's obviously just written it off the top of her head. And she is so wrong about Martha, Beatrice, Rose, Josephine, all of which seem to be mentioned on here all the time. And Eleanor has been very popular for about 20 years or more I think. Ruth is a lovely name too. She might be right about Gladys, though. Is it an American website?

MrsWinnibago · 21/09/2014 01:41

It's stupidly American that article and that site is of the WORST type. Where you have to dodge a maze of ads which leap about like starving whores in an attempt to get you to feel their tits. Once your finger touches the spot you're out of the article you wanted and into "One crazy tip this Mom used to fool doctors!" territory.

Sorry that's a horribly sexist analogy but that's what those sites are like.

I thought it would be names like Margaret and Fanny.

mathanxiety · 21/09/2014 08:21

She is wrong even about the US.
