Erica? Erika?

Is this a good name? DH and I both like it. My absolute favourite name in the world is Angharad, but as we've no Welsh background at all is it a no-no?

Middle name will be Roberta. This is out as a first name as our surname begins with a 'B' and Bobbie Bxxxxx sounds awful.

Thanks

I really like Erika. I used to know an erica who's sisters were anghared and henrietta. The family had no welsh connections that I know of. I think Anghared sounds prettier than it looks if that makes sense!

Oh and I think Anghared sounds much better with Roberta. I think two a endings sound a bit too sing songy.

If you like Angharad and non-Welsh, you should read the argument going on with the Emiko v Etsuko thread (!)

I prefer the spelling of Erica, I think Erika looks a little harsh. It's a lovely underused name. The only thing I would be concerned about is then having Roberta as a middle name (again lovely), it kind of looks like you really wanted a boy......

Luna- that was my worry, looking as though we wanted an 'Eric Robert' but accidentally got a girl!

I thought maybe Erika looks a little more Scandanavian than Erica, and maybe makes it less of a girls' version of a boys' name?

I agree Angharad Roberta flows better, but..... We're just not Welsh!

Does it matter that you're not welsh though? I know a little girl with a very welsh name, no one raises an eyebrow. I wanted a welsh name for DD but her welsh father vetoed it! I think you should use the name you love best.

You could maybe go for something a bit more....unique Grin

On a serious note I'd go for Angharad if you love it. I don't think a welsh connection is required.

Ahh, nice to see people like my RL name

Erika is the Swedish spelling, Erica is the name of an English heather plant.

Although I do think Angharad sounds better with Roberta.

I prefer Erica to Erika and prefer both to Angharad, but if you really love it then use it - it doesn't matter if you don't have any Welsh connections. I think both names sound nice with Roberta.

I agree Erika looks a less boyish since Erik would be an unusual spelling for a boy in th UK.

I prefer Angharad to Erica/Erika, and it wouldn't bother me about not being Welsh (although you would probably get irritated by people presuming that you were). Also prefer Erica to Erika - Erika looks "made up" to me.

Can I just ask how Angharad is pronounced please?

It's pronounced Anne-harrid - or at least that's how the one I knew did.

Never liked the name Erica/Erika. Have a family member & school friend with this name & I always found the pronunciation quite hard sounding.

I think its Ang-harrid, with a g sound in it.
one of my welsh friends has called her daughter this and it sounds lovely in her Welsh accent, less lovely in my English accent. But I do think its a pretty name though.
I prefer Erica to Erika

My DD is called Erica and EVERYONE thinks it's spelled Erika - so for an easy life, go for Erika! (But I agree with ralinax294 - go for Angharad if you love it. It's a great name).
