My DS1 already has a 'common in the 50s-70s' name which no small children are called but that everyone knows. DC2 is due before xmas but DH and I can't agree on names we both like. He doesn't like John but I reckon it's plain enough that I can sway him...

I always think of John as being the most common boy's name there is (it may not actually be, but I think of it like that). Common as in frequent not chavvy! Although that may be more for my generation than the current one. If that's not a problem GFI but it has always put me off for that reason.

I don't really like it, but not a horrible name in any way, shape or form. Of that sort of name, I prefer James or David.

I have a two year old John, though he's Johnny to everyone. I think it's great, no one asks how to spell it and it's surprisingly uncommon nowadays.

I have 10 boys in my reception class this year and two are called john!

I know lots of Johns sort of 30+, none if under. I would guess that the parents now are mostly overloaded with Johns in their lives and so don't consider it for their children, even though it's less common now.
