Baby names

Violet. Does anyone think of...

I like Violet. Without even having to mention it to her I know my mum would instantly say something about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Just William ("I'll scream and scream until I'm sick!"). Does anyone else instantly think of this? And is it even a bad thing? I have a sneaky suspiscion that my mum will criticise any name I mention - which is why I refuse to discuss it with her!

Could you wait until after the baby has arrived before you tell her?

ShadowStar · 22/08/2014 13:17

No.

My first thought is of the colour.

RedToothBrush · 22/08/2014 13:29

TBH yes. Despite the fact I like the name. I think I would choose Viola over Violet as a result.

But its personal choice. If you think hard enough you can find a bad association with just about every name. If you like it, to hell with it! Its a very nice name.

Plus Violet is becoming more popular so less people are clearly seeing this as a bad enough thing to put them off. It was good enough for 709 sets of parents last year afterall.

Mouldypineapple · 22/08/2014 13:32

Always think of Charlie and he Chocolate Factory, it's my favourite film! The first one anyway.. But is that such a bad thing??
I really like the name though, I do have a bit of a purple thing so Violet is great!

pilates · 22/08/2014 13:33

No.

I think of the flower.

AbsintheMakesTheHeart · 22/08/2014 13:37

I didn't think of either until you mentioned them. Lately I've been reading a lot of the WW1 fiction that's been published around the centenary, and have come across a few Violets in there. It also makes me think about Dame Maggie in Downton (a pretty formidable female role model!) I like the name.

magicalmrmistofelees · 22/08/2014 13:40

I would automatically think 'violet, you're going violet' in an American drawl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory style! Then id get over it and think 'what a lovely name' Smile.

Shallishanti · 22/08/2014 13:43

afraid I do think Just William
But, faced with a real person I'd soon forget that I'm sure

cecinestpasunepipe · 22/08/2014 13:43

Love it. Just don't give her Elizabeth as a middle name!

temporaryusername · 22/08/2014 13:44

I didn't make the connection.

Buscake · 22/08/2014 13:45

Afraid so 'you're turning violet, Violet'

LackaDAISYcal · 22/08/2014 13:48

I think of a lovely old lady who I look after at work; it's a lovely name.

Teladi · 22/08/2014 13:50

My DD has a little friend called Violet. That association had never even occurred to me until now! My DD is having confusion about it also being a colour though, she has a little book that shows colours and keeps asking where hers is after she's seen Violet's!

Legionofboom · 22/08/2014 13:52

I really want to love this name but I hear Violate.

FreeSpiritsBadAttitude · 22/08/2014 13:52

I really like Violet. And by the time your Violet hits her teens it'll just be tedious adults mentioning the film connection.

Castlemilk · 22/08/2014 13:52

I would probably think of both, but not madly so. A little Violet would soon become just her, if you see what I mean.

However, I don't like the name and can't understand the recent popularity (on here anyway). To me, it sounds prissy and really not a very nice sound. And I've known three of the very much older generation called it, all of whom were known as Vi (or worse, Our Vi). No.

Sootgremlin · 22/08/2014 13:56

My grandmother, the flower, lovely.mjust William a little but only if with Elizabeth.

Can't say I think of Choc Factory, other names like Veruca stand out more from there!

ShesARumUn · 22/08/2014 13:57

No I don't think of either of those two things. I absolutely love the name, it was on our shortlist for a girl, but we had a boy. Also love the nickname Letty.

Sootgremlin · 22/08/2014 13:57

It will be a middle name if I have another girl, forgot to add.

jobrum · 22/08/2014 14:29

Hmm. Tbf I think I'd have to control myself from teling her she'd gone violet! People keep asking me if Ive thought of any names or have a list and Im ashsmed to admit that I havent. Not because Im set on one name, just that I cant handle the responsibility! Our cat came with a name when we got her from the rescue centre, that was much easier!

I think I like he ne as it sounds fun. Snappy to say without sounding harsh.

I love it, and it's pretty popular these days.

I think of VioleNt. Sorry!

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2014 21:04

Yes, a bit, but only because 5 yo ds is obsessed with Roald Dahl. I also know 3 or 4 non-fictional little girls called Violet.

unlucky83 · 24/08/2014 21:10

I wanted to call DD2 violet - I think of the flower and I like flower names...nn could be Letty -I love it
But DP and DD1 both said Violet toilet - she'll be called toilet at school...
I called her something else ...which no-one pronounces the same way. I wish I'd called her Violet!
