Some of my Aunties were born in the 1920s. Lillian, Rose, Nora and Gladys. There was one more but I never met her and can't remember her name atm, might pop back later if I do remember.

Any reason why you want a 20's name?

One I liked when doing my family tree was a relative named Alice but she was only known as Lallie. It was quite a common nickname in the 1920s for Alice.

My dad was born in the 1920's. His sisters names were Norah and Kathleen. His SILs were Catherine, Dorothy, Elizabeth and Irene, so I imagine they were all fairly popular names of the time.

Quite a few Fannys back then, you might want to avoid that name though!

My Grandma was born in the 1920s and her name is Sybil Alice and her sister was Eve. Was wondering if Sybil might start to make a comeback due to Downton Abbey, but not quite yet...

Wow. What a response. You're all brilliant, thanks a lot.

I'm a fiction writer. I was struggling with a name for a female character born early 1920s.

Thanks again

Paddington just checked your list and my Aunt was Elsie. Thanks Smile

She died in infancy, and I'm quite old hence the forgetfulness Smile

There's a huge thread on The Chalet School. If you have a look there (for the pre-WW2 books), they are school girls in the 1930s, so would have been named in 1920s. It'll show you which European names were recognisable in UK then too.

And by that reckoning, you'd probably need to go for Joey, Madge or Grizel.

I was going to suggest going into any nursery in north London. but actually I only know about 15 on that list (as under fives).

Both my grandmothers and one great-aunt is on there, and feel like my other 2 great aunts, Pam & Daphne, should be.

Slightly confused farfromtree if you are a fiction writer looking for a female name for a character born in the 1920's why didn't you just google "popular girls names in the 1920's"? Rather like the poster who listed 50 of the top 100 names for you?
