Are these names "chavvy"?

Hi all.

Expecting first DC (a son). I do love traditional names like Alexander, Thomas, Joseph and Harry but fear they are a little too popular. I was one of 5 Clare's in my class at primary and my DH always had two or three others with the same name in his class's so we definitely want something a bit less common (may use one of the above as a mn)

Two of my favourites are Austin and Mason but DH insists they are "chavvy" (his words not mine! It's more for lack of a better word than him being horrible snobbish)

He really likes Lucus but I'm afraid I can't get "mucus" out of my head! He seems to be coming round a bit to Austin but is more fearful of what others may think of it. What do you all think when you hear Austin and Mason?

Mason is chivvy, Austin is not. It is a car.

givemeaclue Thu 10-Apr-14 15:08:48

And a city.

lottiegarbanzo Thu 10-Apr-14 15:09:00

Well it's usually spelt Lucas, does that help?

MrsTonsofbloodykids Thu 10-Apr-14 15:10:54

I prefer Austin. Mason is a bit common...

bakingtins Thu 10-Apr-14 15:10:55

How about Luke?

Ruprekt Thu 10-Apr-14 15:13:12

Mason is chavvy.

Austin is not, but not keen.

Luca is lovely as is Lucas.

Lucas or Lukas usually I think - never seen it spelled like mucus before.

I don't like Austin, but wouldn't say it was chavvy at all. Mason, along with other 'surnamey' names like Tyler, might be seen as a little chavvy though. Whatever chavvy means.

BlondeMalteser Thu 10-Apr-14 15:19:09

I've never liked luke, Luca or Lucas for the exact reason you've said. I think people correcting you on your spelling are missing the point. However it's spelt, it is pronounced the same. Luke rhymes with puke, and Lucas makes me think mucus and puke together lol not a good combo.
I think Austin is great. Mason is sweet too and reminds me of little mason disick, Kourtney Kardashian's son who is adorable

Vintagebeads Thu 10-Apr-14 15:19:50

My grandad was Austin..its not a bit chavvy.

hoppinghare Thu 10-Apr-14 15:20:10

I only like Joseph and Harry.

I dislike Mason and Austin and agree with your DP.

Oh and Luca is nice.

UriGeller Thu 10-Apr-14 15:20:42

I like your 'traditional' names. Especially Alex and Joe. They are popular because they are great names. I don't like either Mason or Austin though, they'll be the 'Dwayne' and 'Gary' of the future.

BuggedByJake Thu 10-Apr-14 15:20:42

I like Lucas & don't mind Austin. Mason is not so good.

TheKangaroo Thu 10-Apr-14 15:20:49

I love Lucas- but Lucus looks misspelt and mucusy!

I LOVE Mason (not so much Austin) and I don't think either of them are 'chavvy'. Mason is sweet and one of my favourite names, I don't like Austin as much but I can see why someone would like it as it sounds quite strong and handsome a name.

Girlwithnotattoos Thu 10-Apr-14 15:21:12

Mason - definitely no, I know a few and yes they are all awfulhmm
Austin - not at all keen, think Austin Rover and bad cars hmm
Lucas - not too bad, but prefer Luke but always think Luke warm so wouldn't be my choice.

Creamycoolerwithcream Thu 10-Apr-14 15:23:51

I like the traditional names you listed and also Lucas. I think Austin and Mason sound a bit Americany and as if you are trying to be different.

Lesleythegiraffe Thu 10-Apr-14 15:40:29

Mason is chavvy, but Austin is fine.

LOL @ Lucas and mucus!

ToffeeJungle Thu 10-Apr-14 15:53:28

I quite like Mason and Austin, I can see why they might be perceived as 'chavvy' though - obviously not as traditional as something like Joseph, a bit surnamey, a bit American, a bit 'want to be different', and can be names for other things (job / car).

I really like Lucas, Luca & Luke.

LEMmingaround Thu 10-Apr-14 15:56:16

So long as your surname isn't Morris

NearTheWindymill Thu 10-Apr-14 15:58:56

Don't like either I'm afraid for reasons similar to your husbands. If you want something a bit different much prefer Lucas or:

Conrad
Magnus
Merlin
Gawain
Caspar

UriGeller Thu 10-Apr-14 16:07:03

Rufus? Bit like Lucas but less mucousy.

grizzabellia Thu 10-Apr-14 19:30:27

Really don't like Mason and I think the 'c' word would definitely apply.

Not keen on Austin personally but is not as bad as Mason.

I also think mucus when hear Lucas, no matter how you spell it. Luke is lovely though, and you don't hear many around. I also like to avoid popular names but if it is a choice between something like Mason and Alexander I would go for the lovely classic name!

everlong Thu 10-Apr-14 19:33:17

If you have to ask if a name is chavvy then it definitely is.

Wolfiefan Thu 10-Apr-14 19:34:11

Really don't like Mason.
I'd spell your other choice Austen. (Is that wrong?!)

mummy1973 Thu 10-Apr-14 19:43:54

I agree with your dh and look like all your traditional names. grin
