We have a boy due in 5 weeks. We have a small list of names but one we quite like is Auron, what do you think?

...after the village in the Alps or the fantasy game figure??

I like it...sounds "golden" to me.

My first reaction was that it looks like an unfinished Auberon (which would normally be shortened to Aubrey, if you want the same meaning but fewer syllables).

Not keen. It sounds like one of those hybrid names to me. Auron, son of Audrey and Ron.

Auron is another name for the mathematical ratio known as the Golden Section.
It has been used for centuries as a guide to pleasing proportions, and is still used by architects and designers today.

It's a very interesting concept.

But - and I apologise in advance for using an offensive word- don't you think that, because of the way it sounds, there's a danger that bullies/teasers in the playground will inevitably turn it into 'moron'?

He will spend his life saying "No, not Aaron, Auron" which would be very, very tedious. Don't do it.

Like "Here's Our Ron..." ? Brilliant, if you live in Coronation St.

WYOO is a radio station - so presumably a DYAC for this thread.

We don't worry about horrible names at school really. kids will pick on other kids no matter what, it doesn't have to rhyme. My nephew is called James, kids call him smelly James. kids are mean, they don't need to rhyme to do that.

The Auron/Aaron thing we have thought about but I don't think they sound that much alike. It's said like oar-an not our-ron Wink

No it's too wacky. Are you choosing it for yourself or the child?

How do you pronounce?

I have to say, it seems a little made up. I think Aaron is better.

I don't think children get picked on for names nowadays, especially if you live in a multicultural area (or very MC area!).

'Auron', according to Wikipedia, is 2 superheroes from DC comics, a planet on Blake's 7, a 'playable character' from Final Fantasy, and a character in 'Dragon Champion'.

I don't like the idea of giving a person a name for life that is so very 'niche' and not a real name. It's like calling him 'Spiderman'.

Sorry, OP!

Reminds me of sauron. Sounds like a mispronunciation of Aaron.

Hyva- like how you missed out all the other meanings Grin

So most people think no then? Guess we'll go with Elliott then and use it as a middle name.

Hmmm, not sure.

Aeron instead maybe? Welsh name, not associated with fantasy characters or maths as far as I am aware.

Made up silly fantasy novel name, sorry.

I'd think it'd be likely to be changed to Oral at school.

Can't have Aaron, have a brother called that and a step brother also called Aaron but pronounced more like Aeron.

I have an Arran. I didn't want "Air-Ron" which is how "Aaron" is supposed to be pronounced.

As it happens, most people call him "A-ran" not exactly what I was expecting but actually it kinda suits him.

I would pronounce Auron as in "aura" with "on" at the end. Is that right?

Actually, thinking about it, I quite like it.

That's exactly how you say it Smile

It would really be better if other people gave their opinions on the sound of the name just from hearing/seeing it rather than looking it up in the internet first. We're well aware of it's meanings and origins just wanted to know if it sounded OK as a name really. When people are introduced to him I doubt they'll get their phones out and Google his name to see if it has a suitable meaning. Wink
