What do you think of Bryony/Briony. Surname Thorne. I am thinking of Alexandra or Kate as a middle name

Love the name (first spelling). A friend has recently named her dd Bryony. But, I don't think I'd put a plant name with the surname Thorne. Sorry.

I like it and would love to use it for a DD but it doesn't go with our surname which is totally different but a similar theme to yours.

Its hideous (my name and hate it). I know 2 that equally hate it. Alexandra however is beautiful :)

Not Bryony Thorn ffs! Why not rose thorn? Would be just as stupid.

To be fair in my experience people have no idea its a plant, it wouldn't be the first thing entering my head (lots and lots of people have not heard of the name round my way).

Its overall ugliness would put me off (sorry blondemalteser) your other names are lovely btwm

It's a beautiful name. But not with Thorne, no.

I don't like it.

When I hear it I think Brian-y. And it sounds clunky and masculine.

I really like it but I think it's funny with Thorne. Some won't know it's a plant but many will and Briony Thorne will bring a smile to their faces (in private at least, I'm still having a giggle to myself).

I've just asked dh an he's giggling too at Bryony Thorne.

hunreeeal · 14/03/2014 19:31

Too similar to Brian.

IslaValargeone · 14/03/2014 19:33

I really like the i spelling, but agree with with front doorstep about it not working with Thorn as the surname.
Not only is it a plant, but I believe it's a poisonous one.

I like Bryony but not with Thorne.

What about Bronwen?

chattychattyboomba · 14/03/2014 20:59

I like it on theory but to say it, it does sound a bit clunky. Doesn't seen to flow.

I quite like Briony.

I agree with some of the other posters that it doesn't work with the surname.

Thanks everyone. For those who say it sounds too much like Brian, I have to say I never really made that connection. It's said Bry-uh-new. Not Brian-nee. I also have a passion for horticulture so just think of the plant breed Bryonia rather than Brian!
The surname is an issue as most have pointed out which is a real shame because I love the name. I am not actually married yet (been with my partner 8 years) but will probably be getting married summer 2015. I am considering a double barrel. My surname is Winslett so perhaps Bryony Alexandra Winslett-Thorne would not be so bad!

Wasn't Sleeping Beauty's real name Briar Rose?

Bryony Thorne has a similar quality. I like it. The name 'Bryony' is redolent of lawn dresses and hedgerows to me anyway. I think it's very pretty and evocative with the surname Thorne.

Of course if you go the DB route, most of the time DD would be known as Bryony Winslett-Thorne (middle names rarely get used) and that sounds lovely, has a good rhythm AND overcomes the overly horticultural thing if it bothers you.

I have never heard bryony pronounced Bry-uh-new, that makes so sense Confused

I assumed the 'new' bit was a typo. Was it not?

I like Bryony but not with Thorne, sorry!

I was just going to say what fideline said, I have always LOVED Briar Rose so think Bryony is just as beautiful. Have you thought of Briar? And Alisvolatpropiis I'm fairly sure that was just a typo since the E and W are next to eachother
