Can I have Amelie if my brother used Emily?

Are Amelie and Emily too close?
My brother named his little girl Emily and we really like Amelie?
What do you think...

Tough one. I love Amelie. Will they be close in age? If there are a few years between, I think you're fine, less confusion. Or if you plan to use a nickname.

If they're very close in age... might be frustrating. I actually have a cousin born eight months after me, same first name. Hmm It was always a source of amusement more than contention. Did bother me a little as a child, but they were identical names, not just similar.

Orange5 · 13/01/2014 05:15

Thanks.
There are a few years, and we were thinking of Milly as a nickname.

Way too similar.

Are there no other names you like?

picnicbasketcase · 13/01/2014 05:45

I think they are too similar really, even Emily and Milly are very alike. Sorry.

Orange5 · 13/01/2014 05:46

Yes, there are others. But Amelie is our favourite.
Not sure if it makes any difference, but my brother now lives in Australia. It's not like they would be in the same school. :-)

I think it is absolutely fine. It's not like they are siblings. I love both names. Smile

giraffesCantMakeResolutions · 13/01/2014 06:20

Yes it is fine

giraffesCantMakeResolutions · 13/01/2014 06:20

Especially if in Oz! Not like you will be meeting up every weekend!

TwatWeevil · 13/01/2014 06:36

Emily and Milly are very very similar. I wouldn't do it.

There have been hints that my ILs are going to choose a similar name for DN once born to one of our DCs and I am less-than-impressed.

No, we don't own the name, but there are so many names out there and ageing grandparents will inevitably get confused at some point or other.

Turvytopsy · 13/01/2014 06:42

Ageing grandparents will confuse any names even Abraham and Pinocchio! I do it myself with my ds's and I'm not that old and their names aren't even slightly similar!
If you love the name a cousin with a similar sounding moniker shouldn't stop you IMO.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/01/2014 06:44

Just go for it!

woodlandwanderwoman · 13/01/2014 06:48

Go for it. I would be flattered someone liked it that much and it also means you like their daughter, otherwise you'd be saying "we can't do that, it reminds me too much of that awful Emily!"

Mrsindecision · 13/01/2014 07:39

Of course you can! You don't even live in the same country and they are different names. You will only regret choosing a name you like less imo.

ThisIsYourSong · 13/01/2014 07:42

I think they're fine. My DS is Joseph (Jojo) with a cousin Joel and I've never thought anything of it. It's a lovely name

I think its fine.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/01/2014 07:51

Of course you can use it, I wouldn't for a sibling, but that's as far as it goes in terms of being a problem.

SoupDragon · 13/01/2014 07:55

I think they are too close and I wouldn't use it.

With your brother being so far away it does make it less of an issue though. However, it kind of sounds like you've copied him - that may not bother you.

Orange5 · 13/01/2014 08:04

Thanks everyone.
Great food for thought.
We will have to go and do some pondering.

Well you could but personally I wouldn't.

agendabender · 13/01/2014 08:28

Some families (mine) recycle the same names over and over. Amelie and Emily would be considered plenty different!

My sister is an Emily and ny brother's three month old is Amélie. It does get confusing, mainly because we've all been saying Emily for thirty odd years and remembering to change the pronunciation takes effort. We'll get used to it though. If you Luke it, go for it.

Theonlyoneiknow · 13/01/2014 08:44

Yes, different name totally. We have cousins Cherry and Cerys in the family

wiltingfast · 13/01/2014 08:45

I wouldn't personally, they are too similar. "Who? Emily. Amelie? NO EMily. Oh EMily, thought you said AMelie. No I said EMILY" etc etc. Spare everyone please!
