What do you think about Emmet?

Loved it when we decided on it, but as DS's arrival draws nearer (due in Feb), I am getting nervous about our choice. We want something friendly but strong, and not too common. Ugh, I think I've thought too much about it and now I can't get a fresh head, if you know what I mean.

Sounds like a fake American name to me, sorry. Also, it's a Cornish nickname for a tourist!

DontCallMeDaughter Thu 02-Jan-14 20:21:47

I quite like it... Certainly do to know anyone else with that name. If you love it, then don't let anyone else's opinion sway you. Whatever they think they'll get used to it! I certainly wouldn't think anything negative if you introduced me to an Emmet.

HyvaPaiva Thu 02-Jan-14 20:22:19

I don't like it at all, sorry.

I like it..but I do instantly see the face in my mind of Hyacinth Bucket grin

Immediately makes me think of Back To The Future

But I quite like it

Nope - dialect word for 'ant' (hence, the extended meaning of 'grockle' in Cornwall).

Ee'll zound prapper 'local'.

Lagoonablue Thu 02-Jan-14 20:23:45

Is it not Irish? I like it.

ElBombero Thu 02-Jan-14 20:24:03

Mmmmm not keen, where's it come from? Remember only important if you like it, but picking a name like that will cause all sorts of reactions which can be hurtful when your emotionally tender after first, I had the same with my DS

DawnOfTheDee Thu 02-Jan-14 20:24:35

Wasn't Emmet the next door neighbour in Keeping Up Appearances? Not a reference that's likely to bother your DS though really.

It wouldn't be my personal choice but I think it sounds fine OP.

What about Evan? That would fit your criteria too.

The two people I know with this name are American, which is fine, nothing wrong with that...it wouldn't be my first choice of name, buy hey.

EmmaGellerGreen Thu 02-Jan-14 20:25:01

Hyacinth Bucket

Avalicious1980 Thu 02-Jan-14 20:26:21

Hmmmm makes me think of Back to the Future and Keeping up appearances.

loisismyhero Thu 02-Jan-14 20:28:08

I know a 15 year old Emmet and it suits him. I like it. It's not a fake American name at all. It's not common but not unheard of in Ireland, because of Robert Emmet. Nobody would bat an eye at it here.

I think of it as a wet toff's name. Sorry. And also he was the neighbour in keeping up appearances

unheardof Thu 02-Jan-14 20:28:41

Thanks for the opinions! Hmm, feels more negative than positive. I am Irish and it was used a bit over here, mostly in the 70s and 80s, but it has German origins.

Is it a nn for Emerson?

I think it's okay, prefer Elliot smile

Great name, I think of Ireland. I know 2 Emmet, both Irish, both in their 30s. Strong and friendly- you've got it.

weirdthing Thu 02-Jan-14 20:42:24

I love it (disclaimer - I am N.Irish).

toobreathless Thu 02-Jan-14 20:43:36

Love it.

SS3J Thu 02-Jan-14 22:11:41

I like it. Certainly wouldn't think it was weird.

DessieLou Thu 02-Jan-14 22:52:28

I love Emmett! Wouldn't go with our surname though. Go for it!

DessieLou Thu 02-Jan-14 23:45:01

Meant to say, I also love Everett which is similar.
