We had decided on Rufus Caspar.

It was perfect.

We knew no other child with the name,it creates the NN Ru which I adore (can't use rupert or Reuben either),it's not popular but not unknown,it has no terrible associations,it goes brilliantly with our other DC names, and it's cool dammit.

But now a sort-of-relative-family-friend has used it for her PFB,and it will look like we've copied and I know it's childish but I do care about that for some reason.

It's taken me months to settle on a name and now I have to start all over again

It's Not Fair!

A Ruaridh will get Ru for short...any Scottish connections....

Andrew gets shortened to roo sometimes.

I like Casper!

or Ruan (that's cornish I think)

I was going to suggest that too, although have a friend with a ds with that name and nobody can ever remember how to spell it.
What about Struan - Stru, or could you get away with Rory, and call him Ru?

Just use the name anyway. You love it and will regret not using it.
Is there anyway you could sit them down and explain how you feel without them feeling upset?

It is a lovely name.

Use it anyway.

Vegas that was a bit mean.

Just use it anyway, know one will think you have copied it.
I would casually drop it in to conversation with them at some point, before your Ds arrives.

No,I don't know them enough to chat,we hardly see them...it's just a horrible coincidence that we are having babies quite close together and all extended family have close contact with us both iyswim...
I never thought I'd care about it this much Confused

Ruaridh - no Scottish connections, and I can barely spell it myself
Andrew - not our style at all
Ruan - sounds like ruin
Struan -I really dislike this name
Rory - too popular

see it's hopeless.

I don't care if Vegas hates it.

Please use it anyway. It's lovely, works well with siblings names and you love it.
Maybe start telling your close family before he arrives and see how it goes down.

Just use Ru as a full name? If you were planning on shortening it anyway...

Report
Inkspellme · 06/10/2013 19:28

how about Ruairi (pronounced Roor-ri). ?

how close is this couple? Are they likely to use ru as a nn too? would you see them and their child often? If not, consider going for your first choice anyhow. the attention about the same name will blow over.

DitsyDonkey · 06/10/2013 19:28

You were considering Asa before.....I think Asa is a much much much nicer name, why not use that? Ir use Caspar as a first name?

Report
TeWiSavesTheDay · 06/10/2013 19:29

Did they just pick rufus? Or is it both names?

If you hardly ever see them I would honestly go for the same name and feign ignorance.

DitsyDonkey · 06/10/2013 19:30

Or Cassius or Cassian?
