Not sure my DC have very unusual names but neither is in top 100.

My name was unusual in the 70s but very popular now - shows how things can change!

Yes. I have foreign name (I know one other woman called my name) and DD has foreign name too.

Mine is very dull, and I've always hated it,it doesn't feel like my name, just a name that is attributed to me and a ton of other women of my generation.

DP's name is very unusual,he's always liked it,never been taunted for it,and has always felt attached to it.

Our DC have slightly unusual names.

I have never met someone else with my name (thankfully its horrid)

My children have what I call unusual but not weird names. (aka names most people have heard of but perhaps doesn't know one off)

I like it that way.

my name is ridiculously popular and my children all have fairly uncommon names.

My name is really normal/dull. I hate it and everyone I know calls me by a nickname.

I'm pregnant and have picked an untraditional name for my son, its actually a surname from my DPs family. Grin

I always wished for a more exciting name.

My name was unusual when U was a childe, but became incredibly popular when I hit adulthood. One of my middle names was one of the old-fashioned names which is currently very popular. And my other middle name is very, very unusual in this country. It will probably end up being the top girls' name of 2025.

When I was a child. I hate the keyboard on this phone.

My name is as common as muck.

I refused to use any baby names in the top 100. It really isn't fun being one of 2/3/4 other 'meglets' in your class at school.

The one girl I knew growing up who had a REALLY unique name has named her children Jack, Sophie and Emma. She hated being singled out.

She also works with children so purposely picked the most popular names.

Even if a name is in the top 100, you'd still be pretty unlucky to have one in the same class as you.

My name is well known but not that popular (currently top 50, lower when I was born). DC1 and planned DC3 are top 25; DC2 is top three.

I didn't share a name with a child in my class until I was 16; we hardly ever meet a DC1 or DC3; we meet a lot of DC2. Unless you are the very top few names in a year you are more likely to share a birthday with someone in your class than a first name.

On the other hand, I note that the only duplicated name in the new intake to school this year is Oscar which was something like 150th in the rankings for the year in question. You never know what will crop up.

My daughter has a very unusual name, which is a family name. It is an English/Scottish name that is rarely used but the Italian version of her name is more common.

I have a name that most people will have heard of but not given to many people under the age of about 80 (a little more common in America though, I think). My husband again has a family name. I've never heard anyone outside his family with his name (well, one or two, from a google search). It's a place name- lovely and very strong. My son's name is very traditional and quite common (in the top 100)- we didn't want to give him a rare name for the sake of it.

The popularity (or lack of....) of our names has never really occurred to me. As has been said before, unless it's top 10 there are unlikely to be too many about in one place.

I suppose my name is normal though not wildly popular.

Traditionally spelt one way in the UK and about 50 (exaggerating) different ways in the US.

RhondaJean · 20/09/2013 22:00

In the last month, for the first time, I have met another Rhonda in person.

It's not an out there name but nor is it common among 30 something Scottish women.

Likewise with both DDs, I have met one woman with the same name as each of them. One before we named dd2, the other when dd1 was about 7.

Unusual for where?

I have a name that is unusual in the UK, but not in the country where I was born. Dh has a name that is unusual in the UK (where he was born) but not elsewhere.

My Dc's names are both unusual where we live (and they were born), but not elsewhere.

I have an unusual name (in England) and I've chosen very safe/recognisable names for my children - mainly because I spent my teenage years correcting the spelling and pronunciation of my name, and wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Report
Hassled · 20/09/2013 22:05

I don't know why I said teenage years - it's been since I first lived in the UK, so aged 10 or so.

Mine is rare rather than unusual. DD ditto. DP's is top ten though!

My name is a traditional name but not common in the this generation.
My girls have traditional names. One of which is very popular, although I was unaware of that at the time we chose it. It would not have stopped me using it as it was a family name.
There was one other girl in my year group with the same name as me. I loved it! She was my twinner!

MultipleMama · 20/09/2013 22:20

Well mine is the Russian spelling of Louisa and my eldest is called Kvothe. So I guess you could say so.

According to this names.darkgreener.com/, there were 63 children registered with my name last year, but only 45 had DD's, and 37 had DS's - no lost school uniforms in our house!

Dh and I have just about the most common christian names you can get for our respective birth years. I at least 4 women with the same name as me, and the same for men with the same name as dh.

When we named our children 12 and 10 years ago we thought we were choosing unusual but not unheard-of names for them. WRONG!! turns out they also have the most common christian names for their generation.

Oh well, nothing we can do. We are The Incredibly Common Names Family.
