Imogen vs Molly (middle name Alice vs. undecided)

Seems fairly unanimous!

My DH is going to be gutted when he reads this. What I failed to mention is that Imogen Alice is my choice, and Molly is his choice. While we both like each name, we each have clear preferences.

I was also slightly put off by how common Imogen has become. However I was forced to get over that feeling when Amelia was born. We had chosen her name 8 years prior, long before the name was even close to the top 20 let alone no. 1.

When I realised how popular Amelia had become, I was so put off we nearly changed her name at the very last minute... to Imogen!! However we figured that even if she had been born 4-8 years ago, nothing would have stopped the name from becoming over-used and the name was still special to us. In our hearts we know were weren't simply following a trend.

We didn't realise at the time that Imogen was also starting to surge in popularity until later that year. And so we find ourselves in nearly the same position... I'll just keep telling myself we are too ahead of the game for our own good smile Haha...

thanks all for the input.

These are two very different names!

I detest Molly and all those twee little-girl kind of names. Sorry.

Imogen is a Shakespearian classic. It is a name that would have been on my short-list 20 years ago and was very unusual back then, but it's had a real surge in popularity since. That would put me off now, but of the two it's an easy winner for me. Goes fine with Alice.

Imogen Alice.

Imogen Alice for sure. You don't want Millie and Molly!

Imogen Alice is a beautiful name

To the OP I prefer Imogen. Molly and Imogen are such completely different names IMO and look strange even being on the same list.

Miaow...... pls elaborate. Imogen is on my shortlist and I'm concerned reading your reply. Is it becoming a 'c' name ?

I prefer Molly but agree with others that it doesn't really 'go' with Amelia. Imogen Alice is lovely and sounds great alongside Amelia Catherine.

Imogen has got very popular and gone rather down market in our area in the last couple of years - we considered it for dd1 and I'm glad we didn't considering the amount I've heard it bellowed at toddlers recently.

Imogen is lovely. Molly is nice, but a bit nickname-y.

Imogen definitely

Imogen Alice.

I know a couple of Immys and went to school with a Midge, but you can probably avoid Momo (sounds like one of those pet names derived from a toddler sibling's mispronunciation).

I agree that Molly would be asking for Milly/Molly trouble, but Alice Molly works.

Imogen Alice is an absolutely beautiful name! I do like Molly but I think Imogen Alice together is just lovely smile

Imogen Alice, I agree Molly is to casual and nnish to go with Amelia Cathrine (which is a lovely timeless name).

Round here Molly would already sound dated.

NomDeClavier Fri 20-Sep-13 13:53:09

Imogen Alice definitely.

Amelia and Imogen make a lovely pair too.

Amelia & Imogen works better than Amelia & Molly imo, especially if Amelia gets shortened to Milly ( as it does with our niece)

MortifiedAdams Fri 20-Sep-13 13:30:35

I sort of like Imogen, but once heard someone calling their Imogen Momo and it totally put me off.

I adore Molly, but agree it doesnt match Amelia.

I love Alice (its dds MN), and it has a great ring to it alongside Amelia. Alice Molly Surname?

I really like Imogen Alice, I love the name Molly but I think it's quite similar to Amelia (quite often shortened to Millie)

SeashellHoarder Fri 20-Sep-13 13:23:28

I'm not a huge fan of Imogen, but Molly doesn't fit well with Amelia.

I think of Molly as more of a nickname. Whereas Amelia is a proper name.

Alice on the other hand is FAB - could you use as a first name?

TransatlanticCityGirl Fri 20-Sep-13 12:50:57

Please help me with our girls shortlist...

DD1 is Amelia Catherine (she shares a middle name with me).

Our top two names if baby is a girl would be:

Imogen Alice (she would share a middle name with her maternal great great grandmother)

Molly - (middle name undecided as I don't think Alice works very well with this first name - and we have no alternatives at present)

Thoughts?
