Do you like it?

DHs suggestion for our DS due in September and it has really grown on me.

DH is half Italian and we have an Italian surname. DD also has a Continental sounding name.

I like that it can be shortened to Dan/Danny and will be uncommon without being 'Eh?'. Would value some opinions, tia.

Gosh I'm not keen on those spellings, or on the Don-tay pronunciation.

He would definitely be a Dante. It wouldn't occur to me to say or spell it any other way.

Interesting, perhaps the name isn't as straightforward as I thought.

I know a two year Dante. (DAN-te) mum's British, dad's Italian. Little boy is squishy blonde haired gorgeousness. Go for it.

Ooh I didn't post to put you off!!! I love the name!

My friend had this for a boys name & was pronouncing it Don-Tay which I don't particularly like. Much prefer Dan-Tay. In the end bump decided to be a girl.

Reminds me too much of Dante's inferno, travels through purgatory ... Sorry x

So to summarise, so long as we 1. Have a suitably Italian surname, 2. Stick to the Italian spelling and pronunciation, 3. Produce a child who looks of sufficiently Italian heritage (brown eyes and ringlets preferable), then we might just get away with it?!

The Dante's Inferno thing. A couple of people have mentioned it. See upthread, part of the epic Divine Comedy considered to be the writer's masterpiece. A positive association I thought.

To be named after a famous writer I mean

Don't think there's anything wrong with the Divine Comedy association really.

There are worse things to be associated with.

Indeed there are three parts to the Divine Comedy: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Not too different from a day with your average toddler then. grin

Very cliched name in the African American community. Also spelled Dontae or Dontay.

With the Italian surname, I'd say go for it! If he (inexplicably smile) prefers something plainer he still has a good option with Dan.
