Or is that an old term for STI. I don't want a child to be lumbered with embarrassing initials.

Onyabike Tue 30-Jul-13 13:05:09

Very very very wrong!

NotAnotherPackedLunch Tue 30-Jul-13 13:06:47

Very wrong indeed.

SirBoobAlot Tue 30-Jul-13 13:08:36

Very wrong.

SirChenjin Tue 30-Jul-13 13:09:54

Oh no. No no no no no grin

mignonette Tue 30-Jul-13 13:10:04

Kids these days are familiar with STD but many do not know that VD is the same. Its kind of dying out. POAS is just as bad!

Crannog Tue 30-Jul-13 13:10:33

Please don't do it.

DuchessFanny Tue 30-Jul-13 13:11:01

Wrong i'm afraid ...

chickensaladagain Tue 30-Jul-13 13:12:41

I think anyone under 30 wouldn't know what VD is

I'm closer to 40 and we called them STDs at school so I had to think about it

By the time your lo reaches the end of primary I would say it would be totally obsolete and fine to use

meditrina Tue 30-Jul-13 13:13:16

Well, if you google "VD" the results are overwhelmingly venereal (Urban Dictionary has this definition "Something that Bishops and Generals catch from public toilet seats. The rest of us can catch it from fucking prostitutes.")

Yes, it's slowly becoming the less common term. No, the association has far from vanished and probably won't do so for quite some time to come.

Onyabike Tue 30-Jul-13 13:17:26

Seriously? You would be mad to use the initials VD! The term is not obsolete! Look at Wikipedia, under "Sexually transmitted disease", it's referred to on there! NO NO NO!

Neverdonethisbefore Tue 30-Jul-13 13:19:27

Thanks everyone, just what I expected but wanted to double check. I love a few names beginning with V but will have a rethink.

mignonette Tue 30-Jul-13 13:20:02

Not saying Op should use it rather that it has greater negative connotations for older people don't really rate wiki as a source tbh smile but accept the argument that it is not yet obsolete enough to maybe use.

Ohhelpohnoitsa Tue 30-Jul-13 13:22:01

I teach one. the kids have never mentioned it (yet) but all the staff do.

mignonette Tue 30-Jul-13 13:22:29

Wasn't the Beckhams accessories range called VBD once?

Onyabike Tue 30-Jul-13 13:29:03

I'm not saying I rate wiki either, but it is used by A LOT of people! It's like suggesting that, because you don't rate what's in the Daily Mail, nobody reads it!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles Tue 30-Jul-13 13:36:36

I wouldn't, sorry.

StarWanderer Tue 30-Jul-13 20:57:42

Our little ones initials would have been CJD (as in mad cow disease!) and I'm so glad someone talked me out of it!!

Writerwannabe83 Tue 30-Jul-13 21:09:36

Initials are a huge factor when deciding baby names smile

Please don't inflict VD on your child.... smile

Tickledyellow Tue 30-Jul-13 21:30:59

Haaaaaaa haaaaaaa! Lol! This is a joke right?!!!!

I had these initials until I got married. Only one girl at school really took the piss and I've had a few sniggers here and there but never anything too bad. Am 31 now. Am still a bit hmm at my mum for not thinking about it. Can you give a middle name so there's an extra initial to use if needed?

miffybun73 Tue 30-Jul-13 22:13:47

Very very wrong I'm afraid.

A girl I was at school with had those initials and she changed her name legally when she was about 11. Became known by her middle name.

Don't do it!

sourcreamandchives Tue 30-Jul-13 22:26:07

I'm 33 & had the initials VD until I married 5 years ago. Even had them embroidered on front of games kit (with middle initial too). I knew what VD was, but most of my friends didn't - I used to tell them myself & laugh.

No one ever bullied me/made fun of me. OK, it wasn't ideal but it honestly didn't affect me negatively.

StayAwayFromTheEdge Tue 30-Jul-13 22:37:26

Yes - The wife of a local footballer as VD embroidered on to her car headrests, I snigger every time I see it.
