What would you shorten Ambrose to?

Just that really. I think we're now decided on Ambrose as a name for Clem's brother, and whilst I would use his full name, I wonder what options there are for a shortened form/ nickname in case friends and family tend towards shortening it. Any ideas please?

I wouldn't. I'm sure some people will insist on trying Amby, Brose or whatever but it isn't a name that has a natural shortening.

If you call him Ambrose, I'd expect family to follow suit (especially if you introduce him as "this is Ambrose, we wanted a name that wouldn't be shortened" or similar) and by the time he gets to school he is just as likely to end up with a nickname which bears no resemblance to his actual name!

I knew an "Amby".
I think it is fine as an abbreviation.

I wouldn't

The only one that comes naturally from Ambrose is Amber and you can't do that!

Bro, possibly but that sounds a bit 'street'!

I'd just use it as it is.

'we wanted a name that wouldn't be shortened' ... I knew a girl whose parents naïvely thought that when they named her Helen.

In this case what sprang to my mind was 'Rosie'... (probably because I remember the series 'Rosie' from way back though that NN was from the chap's surname)

Brose would sound like a natural shortening to me.

My brother is called Ambrose, and it is not generally shortened ( he is in his 50s, there's been ample opportunity). He occasionally gets Brose , (especily from me in fake Brooklyn accent calling him "Brose my Bro"). But seriously, it us bot a name with s natural abbreviation, and his NBA, have been largely based on our surname or his mad hair.

Rosie, I love the name Ambrose. You'd have to be a tough guy to pull off Rosie though!

When I was a kid I had a cat called Ambrose (channeling Pinky and Perky). We used to call her Amb. I know that Ambrose isn't a girls name btw. .

I thought Ambrose was a girls' name so I was going to say Amber or Amy! Hmm

Yay! Ambrose is a fab name. I saw an Ambrose on telly (Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, but don't let that put anybody off) who shortened it to Ambry, which worked quite well I thought.
