Sibling name for Esme?

nutella81 · 19/07/2013 21:14

My DD is Esme (pron. Ezmee) - so whilst it's an old name, my chosen pronunciation is more modern (compared to the Ezmay pron.). Problem is do I go traditional or more modern for sibling? I think it's hard to match...

Your pronunciation of Esmé isn't modern, it's wrong. This is a French name and pronouncing it Esmee is just anglicising it. So, if you want to go the 'modern' route, I think you'd be better off coming up with a relatively new name, rather than mispronouncing an old one.

nutella81 · 20/07/2013 08:57

Ficidy - I disagree, as I don't use an accent.

Previous thread illustrates split in opinion:

I'm not sure it's helpful to tell a parent they are pronouncing their own child's name incorrectly! Hmm

Anyway, my suggestions

Phoebe
Florence
Autumn (depending on when it's born obv)
Claire (due a revival, I think!)

Seth
Tim
Oscar (apparently it's popular, but I don't know any and I'm a teacher!)

My tuppence worth!

There's nothing wrong with using an anglicised version of a name. Many names from other countries have an English version.

I would suggest Ficidy that you post the names of your DC on here so judgement can be passed before you are so rude to an expectant Mother! On another note, Esmé is a French name for a boy and it is only in recent years that is has been used as a girls name too. Esme, however, is also the common abbreviation of the Spanish name Esmerelda.

Ficidy · 22/07/2013 13:46

LadyKooKoo, I actually don't have any children yet, but am expecting my first and Esmé is on our list.

The OP mentioned nothing about her Esme (Esmee) being an abbreviation of Esmerelda, so that's got nothing to do with this thread. What she did essentially say is that that she has put her own pronunciation on the name Esme (which is meant to be spelt with an accent and pronounced accordingly).

Yes, there is a vast array of foreign names which have been anglicised (Aimée for example is one and some people pronounce this Amy, not Aim-A, as it should be), but that doesn't mean that it's the correct way to pronounce the name. It just really gets on my nerves when I hear names being said incorrectly.

Maybe this stems from the fact that I'm a language teacher and it therefore grates on me more than normal. I'm also Irish and find it very annoying when (Irish!) people mispronounce Irish-language names, like Cliodhna, for example. This should be pronounced Clee-on-a, but so many people say Clee-own-a, which is wrong.

I know, I should just get over it!

LadyKooKoo · 22/07/2013 15:27

I am also Irish so am well aware of what it is like to have people pronounce my name wrong, I just choose not to be so obnoxious about it.

Ficidy · 22/07/2013 15:36

Apologies for my badly phrased original post. I didn't mean to be obnoxious. I guess it was just frustrating for me to read about how the OP was pronouncing the name. Only a couple of weeks left. Pregnancy hormones sending me loopy.

NowPlayingZone · 22/07/2013 21:58

mrspercypig has the perfect list for you.

I would also add
Fern

nutella81 · 22/07/2013 22:22

Thanks all.

Ficidy - it's not my own pronounciation, it's about 50% of the GP's! (I also know 'Ezmees' in their 20s, so it's been around a while). People sometimes say it your way, but it doesn't really bother me...greater things in life to stress about. Good luck with your last few weeks.
