On the weekend I met a perfectly ordinary Englishwoman whose name was....

Calamity.

No joke.

Definitely not a nickname?

evelynj · 02/07/2013 23:26

Calamity Jane is my face film ever but still no.

Tommy · 02/07/2013 23:27

Hmm

although having seen the new year 7 list today at my school....We have a Beckham Shock

Confitdecanard · 02/07/2013 23:27

Maybe after Calamity Jane - although I think that was a nickname.

PiratePanda · 03/07/2013 13:36

No, it was her actual name, on her official name badge and everything. When we were informed that the manager on duty was called Calamity there was a sharp intake of breath all round, and the owner of the establishment said "no, that really is her name"!

What were her parents thinking?

It does sound like a name.
An unfortunate meaning however.

I once met a comfort, which sounds less like a name but has a better meaning.

lemonmuffin · 03/07/2013 13:48

I quite like it tbh!

I know it's a bit out there but at least it's a change from the usual Sarah/Rebecca/Emma you hear constantly.

LongDeadMotherofHorrors · 03/07/2013 13:50

Calamity is pretty bad, but how about this for placing a burden on a child; Karma? I might add that life has not yet smiled on this child.

Fenton · 03/07/2013 13:51

I like it.

SavoyCabbage · 03/07/2013 13:51

I quite like it too. Better than Adelaide Adams.

Dillydollydaydream · 03/07/2013 13:51

My ds had a son in his nursery class!

HaroldLloyd · 03/07/2013 13:53

I think Karma would be ace with the middle name Chameleon.

LongDeadMotherofHorrors · 03/07/2013 13:54

Harold - you could start a career as a baby namer with that sense of humour! I'm guessing your middle names are Purple and Crayon.

For those of you who like it, do you not realise that calamity means "an absolutely dreadful event"??? I know names like Faith, Hope and Mercy and Blessing, Precious and Gift are common in certain communities, but they're all good things. Why on earth would you give birth to a child and call it Calamity unless you were devastated and didn't want her?

Hmm

Some pretty bad ones I've heard recently:

Peechez (yes, spelt like that)
Diesel
Trojan
Priesthood

LongDeadMotherofHorrors · 03/07/2013 14:01

So this has got me thinking....maybe we could think of some new horrible names just for a laugh. How about Burden, Curse, Omen, Evil, Banana, Melon, Horsehair, Tealeaf.....

Cheeseatmidnight · 03/07/2013 14:03

That name was on wife swap a while ago - I actually think its ace! Then I wanted to call dd Serendipity Blush

Cheeseatmidnight · 03/07/2013 14:05

Accident Smile

ThingummyBob · 03/07/2013 14:09

I once knew of sisters called Faith, Hope, Charity & Rebecca Confused

Also 3 brothers (may have been American iirc) called Rudy, Randy & Jody Shock

I think I would like to have Calamity, Burden & Curse Grin

No-one would ever be able to out-parenthood-misery the mum of those three Wink

LongDeadMotherofHorrors · 03/07/2013 14:10

Could have named two of mine that!

hurricanewyn · 03/07/2013 14:10

Just recently I saw someone with a tattoo for 'Emmer-Leigh'.

Iamanorangesmartie · 03/07/2013 14:24
