Baby names

Bit out of touch with girls names..

Hello, I am an old lurker who used to be up to date with names (this board being my fave) but in the last couple of years have gone off the boil and struggling for fresh inspiration.

So, please can you help me to brainstorm names for a little girl? I am a bit out of touch with naming atm. OH has terrible taste in names and I havent found one we both love.

I adore, but OH doesnt..

Phoebe
Elodie
Ava
Rosalie
Evelyn
Alice
Autumn
Willow
Meredith
Cora
Clara
Greta
Orla

Can you suggest names in a similar vein? Which is your fave? Thanks so much

Equally, Noah was our fave boys name but now its everywhere I am having 2nd thoughts but my OH doesnt like my 2nd choice Jacob :(

What sort of names does your OH like? If you give some examples maybe we can suggest some which are halfway between your two styles?

I like most of the names on your list, especially Willow and Ava.

He doesnt really suggest many to be honest! He used to like Jessica, which I really dont like now, and he has mentioned Lydia, Claudia and Zara, all of which I absolutely loathe (especially the first two).

I also suggested Clarissa once upon a time but dont like that now. OH is a massive geek Grin He quite likes Annie

I guess it will get easier to understand what you like the more people suggest name and you narrow it down.

I think your list seems quite feminine but not too fussy so maybe something like Seraphina would be a bit OTT for you? Something such as Katherine or Brooke not pretty enough?

Do you want something not popular or you don't care if its in the top 100?

How do you feel about all the flowery name; Daisy, Poppy, Lily, Rose etc

Random selection of girls names for you to think about:

Morgan
Mabelle
Heidi
Isla
Imogen
Darcy

Annie is nice, and might work as a nn for Annabel or for Andrea. You never hear Andrea, it is 'normal' but very rare. I really like Lydia and Claudia though Confused sorry! Phoebe is lovely too.
From your list I love Greta, Clara and Naomi from somebody else's list.

Lois is in the same style as Greta I think. And if you like Clarissa you might like the sound of Lois?

Zeenah · 28/06/2013 09:52

Oh more in the style of Greta and Lois, Honor, Hazel, Meryl, Edie,Sylvie, Vivien

I love Greta and really dislike Elodie, at the two extremes of your list for me. Meredith and Cora are also nice.
I also really like Annie.

Love Meredith! How about Anna (NN Annie?)

Corinna
Tamsin
Rhiannon (OK you could probably make Annie a NN for this too)

Thank you all, some lovely suggestions!!

Coral
Martha
Darcy
Heidi
Eden

All used to be on my list!!! Tigoldbits you are spot on with your prediction about Seraphina and Katherine/Brooke. Very true for me.

I dont like flower names though, and not too bothered about popularity of name, although would prefer it not to be two a penny.

I have never heard Evelina, I quite like it how do you pn it? Ev-lina or Eve-lina?

From all the suggestions I most like Coralie and Vivien. I have considered both before..

Also Thea and Tessa.

Whilst I like these names, I just do not know whether I could see myself using them iykwim?

I love Meredith,Clara and Orla from your list.

The anagram issue bothers me with Orla,as it does with Arlo. Because kids (well teenagers) are horrible.

Report
lollydollydrop · 28/06/2013 23:28

Allis, I know what you mean about Orla!!! Its also an anagram of my own name! So ruled out really.

My SIL is called Claire so cant really have Clare.

My cat is Meredith but we call her Merry. I have another thread on can I call my DC the same name as my cat Grin

I knew what you meant,no worries. Smile

I think if you call your cat Merry and don't intend to nickname your daughter Merry should you call her Meredith it isn't an issue.

Frances?
Ummm.... Helena?
Julia, if he's a classical type of bod?
Judith?

Report
lollydollydrop · 29/06/2013 11:16

I like Frankie for a nn but dont like Frances or Francesca.
Judith was on my old list, he didnt like.
Quite like Juliet, but not the shorter Julie :(

Evelina has grown on my over night, but I think there would be pn problems.. Plus dont like Lina if it was shortened, and Evie is so common atm

I really like your H's suggestion of Annie.

I also like Vivien and Tessa.

Lydia and Claudia I' not keen on. They're hard to carry off and to my ear sound a bit harsh (Lydia less so than Claudia but still in the same category).

Would you like more traditional names or variations thereof, like:
Katherine/ Catherine/ Kathryn
Elizabeth/ Eliza/ Elise
Anna/ Hannah/ Anne/ Annie/ Annabel/ Anneliese/ Annika/ Anouk/ Anoushka ---> Susannah
Laura/ Laurel/ Lara/ Lyra
Miriam/ Maryam/ Mary/ Maria/ Mariah/ Marie/ Marianne/ Marina
Louisa
Alexandra/ Alexa
Cecelia/ Celia/ Cecily/ Cicely
Rose/ Rosa/ Rosalind/ Rosalie/ Rosamund
Helen/ Helena/ Elena

Edith
Harriet
Josephine
Matilda
Eleanor
Leonore/ Leonora
Nora/ Honora
Mabel
Pearl
Isadora
Theodora
Antonia
Vita
Tamsin
Daphne
Penelope
