Opinions on Florence please?

hi all, I'm due in 5 weeks & almost set on this name if its a girl, our surname is Jones. NN would be Flora, Florrie, flossie, Flopsie, Flo.
What does everyone think of this?

Other possibilities are Elizabeth/Betsy, (worried royal baby may have this tho), Georgia, Jasmine, Penelope.

3yo son is Dylan

Florence is a lovely name. Your other choices are all nice too, especially Jasmine and Georgia.

I prefer Elizabeth/ Betsey or Georgia to Florence, it reminds me of the Magic Roundabout.

Thanks folks-I don't mind the magic roundabout connotations, although only realised yesterday-esp. with having Dylan already, ho hum, love the show.

Saw Bridget spelt in stones on the beach today & thought it a lovely name, then realised it would be bad with Jones!

Wish I was having more children as I don't want to let any of the names go but going to use 2 family names for middle names. It's hard to find something enough unusual without being weird.

We haven't been to Florence tho Rome was our first holiday together-its on the to-do list.

Florence is very common where I am, there are 4 in DS' nursery! Depends if that bothers you.

I prefer some of your other choices personally but Florence is perfectly nice name with lots of nn potential. My only concern with it is it's quite 'of the moment', whereas your other options aren't IMO but that shouldn't put you off if you love it.

I love Florence (and Flora) not Florrie, Flossie or Flo (or Flo-Jo like Florence Johnston).

Florence was our first choice as we'd had some really happy times there, then dp's cousin called her baby Florence so we ended up with an Elizabeth. I love the name Elizabeth but there are still times I pine after a little flo

Do not give your child the nickname flopsie! That's a rabbits name!
I looked after a Florence when I worked in a care home. She was a proper bossy character and I really liked her. As a name I'm not overly keen but all the older names are in fashion at the mo so it wouldn't be unusual. I met a baby Florence to too long ago.

Florence is lovely. But please not Flopsie. It's either a rabbit, or a nice-but-dim- posh Chalet girl.

Florence is pretty and dh adores it. But will qualify with having met quite a few since naming our dd Flo and there's a chance she'll be one of two in her class when she starts school.

I dont like the other choices but Florence is fantastic and all the derivation (except perhaps Flopsie - rabbit?) are great.

I think Florence is beautiful, don't really like any of the nicknames except Flora though. I also love Georgia from your list but not sure it goes so well with Jones, too many 'jeh' sounds for me.

We love the name and chose it for DD1. She tends to go by Florrie most of the time but now, at 6, she prefers to use the full Florence quite a lot too. She will also introduce herself as Flo sometimes... I occasionally call her Flossie but am the only one to do this. Within the extended family she also gets called Flo-jo and Flodge!

We have never come across another one although it has really risen up the popularity charts since we chose it back in 2006.

I think it goes well with your surname too.

It would have been our choice for a dd but we had a ds :)

However, I now know 6 Florences! So I'd say it's very popular... but depends if that bothers you or not.

Thanks all. The only concern is the upcoming popularity as I know it's in the top 50-100 but we live in Northern Ireland & don't know any here as yet. I hate the idea of someone I know using the name before us but at least we have other choices if they do.

Nice to have some positive feedback as all the family hated it when I threw it out there a couple of months ago. There's a lot to be said for not discussing names in RL until baby arrives as they don't tend to say 'that's an awful name' by that stage!

P.s. Wouldn't use flopsie as proper nn - I have a one syllable name that I've always hated so abbreviations count for me!

My 15 month old is Florence, we moved from Ireland to Australia when she was 9 months old. We have never yet met another Florence. I was sure I would call her Floss or Florrie, but, the full name is sticking for now. I had some minor reservations but, also didn't have any names I preferred (it's my husbands grandmothers name) but, now I could not love it more and DD is such a Florence it's so perfect for her.
