Hi, I am having a boy in September and it's my turn to name. DH is happy with either of these choices. I cannot make up my mind. I would like to see which one is more popular with MN :)

Both nice! I would go for Felix.

loopydoo · 15/05/2013 12:44

I have a friend with a Julian and a SIL with a Felix.

Think Felix is my fave but that might be because I see my nephew regularly so I'm more use to it.

MadBusLady · 15/05/2013 12:46

Felix is great. Love Jules but don't like Julian, there's something a bit wet about it. I think I'd go for Julius or Felix, and between these two I don't know.

Sorry, unhelpful!

thereistheball · 15/05/2013 12:54

Felix or Julius, as madbuslady said.

Libertymae · 15/05/2013 12:56

I agree with MadBusLady. Felix is great, Jules is very cool, but Julian is a bit wet sounding.

Stepmooster · 15/05/2013 13:02

This is very interesting, I was waiting for the - "you cant call him Felix that's a cat" comments my family have made. Thank you ladies

Knowing what happens when you tell you relatives your ideal baby names before the birth, I'd just not tell them and do your own thing. Once the baby is born, they will realise that's the name you love and not mention any links to animals or TV characters etc.

We had this issue with DS (can't say why as would out me) but his name was a very prominent tv character at the time and we stupidly told SIL and BIL, who laughed in our face! Not great. However, after almost changing it to a similar but more less original name, we decided to stuff them and choose the one we previously chose.

Everyone loves him and his name so really glad we chose it.

yellowbutton2 · 15/05/2013 13:49

Don't really like either but at a push Julian

Decoy · 15/05/2013 15:33

I'd vote for Julian as it's more unusual at the moment.

I do like Felix a lot though.

Stepmooster · 15/05/2013 16:38

DH and I work in an office of 50 men, and all of the traditional names that we like are the names of our colleagues. I know it shouldn't matter, but for me I don't want to give my son the same name as someone I work with. These are the only 2 names DH and can come up with that are not too unusual but are not colleagues either, oh and that we like :).

I would like to go with the name that is the most popular, in order to avoid teasing in the playgrounds. So far it looks like Felix is winning.

Felix definitely. It's fab despite the 'cat' association. Is that even still an advert?
I know a couple of adult Julians and always think its quite wet sounding too. Especially on the 6ft 3" muscly hunk

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/05/2013 20:24

Love Julian; don't like Felix at all.

sleepingbeautiful · 15/05/2013 22:24

Julian is better. It's interesting without being weird. Felix is pretty commonly used now. Plus I disagree with the wet comment, I see Felix more that way, a cat or a slightly foppish wimp lol.

evamummy · 15/05/2013 22:27

Julian is cool, underused and masculine. Felix is a cat and a very well known brand of catfood...

KittenofDoom · 15/05/2013 23:07

Julian without a doubt. Classy, classic, uncommon and cool.

Felix is very faddy atm and will date dreadfully as well as being cat food

Stepmooster · 16/05/2013 13:09

I am going to have to do a coin toss or come up with something totally different. My sister stole the only decent family boys name, "Francis" It belonged to both grandfathers and an uncle. I only have Trevor, my father's name left for family inspiration....

Both extremely awesome names. Felix is my favourite though.

Congratulations!

chaya5738 · 20/05/2013 15:08

Felix Smile

What is not to love about a name with an "x" in it?

Felix the Cat is the coolest cartoon ever. Not like naming your child Mickey or Goofy.

shoobidoo · 20/05/2013 15:13

I prefer Julian. Cool, classic and not overused.

Felix is such a well known brand of cat-food here in the UK that that is all I can think of, sorry. Felix the cat may be cool, but it is the catfood association that puts me off.

chaya5738 · 20/05/2013 15:16

I didn't even know there was cat food with the brand name Felix until someone on this board said there was! I actually think that might be quite good as it means the name will never be super-popular (cf: Max)

shoobidoo · 20/05/2013 15:20

This is what many think of felix:

Oh what a cute cat! That actually makes me like the name even more now. Thanks!

Julian is a middle aged cross dressing tv game show presenter in my mind. I'd rather Felix

JumpingJackSprat · 20/05/2013 21:48

Felix is awful. julian is much better.

GaryBuseysTeeth · 20/05/2013 21:53

Julian is a lovely name.
Not a massive fan of Felix (it screams cat to me, but also Bond's American mate in the older 007 films).

I didn't want DS 'sharing' a name with one of DH's workmates, two months after he was born someone transferred with the same name
