We have a baby Alexandra and we'd like her to have an unusual nickname (not Alex as too masculine and not Lexi)
What do you think of:
Alix
Nelly
Lally
Alexa
Sandie

I thought nicknames usually just sort of happened, my DD has lots of nicknames that are vaguely like her name but they weren't planned in advance. I'd think they would just evolve when she arrives. But maybe Xandi, Ali, Lexa, Rara...?

Ours goes by Lexie, Lex, Fluffy, Lump. I assume by the teenage years she will go by Alex or Ali. Nicknames shouldn't be forced IMO. They just happen naturally.

Isn't that all a bit contrived? If you're putting this much thought into inventing a NN why not just call her what you want to instead of Alexandra?

I have to say I prefer Alix to Alexandra anyway.

Alix is usually short for Alixandra, IME

The correct diminutive for Alexandra is Sasha. Sounds classy, too!

You could go all modern with something like:
A'dra

ClamityKate: my husband insisted on this name as I chose the names for DC 1 and 2, and I wanted to be fair with him. Now the baby is born and registered, and I like the name for a grown up woman, but I'd like to have something cute for a baby/little girl. I really like Nelly but not sure it's OK to use it as a short name for Alexandra.

My friends Alexander is Xan (zan) or Xander. I love it.

I know a Lally but not short for Alexandra.

I like Xanny - very cute and baby girl IMO!

Or what about Lexa if you don't like Lexi?

I actually like Andy as well a someone suggested - it reminded me of the character from Dawsons Creek shows age!

I know someone who called their first child, a girl, Alexandra. They then had a boy who they called Alexander! They then realised the Alex nickname was the same for the two so they always called the girl Sandra and the boy Alex. Bonkers ! Tis true, i swear!

Typical Russian nicknames for Alexandra are Sasha and Shura, both of which I love. Of your list I like Alix, though I'm not sure how it is different from Alex except for the spelling? The pronunciation is the same, isn't it?

Love the name Alexandra! Lots of great nickname options.

Zandra. Ultimately you can use what you like though. I once knew a Laura who everybody called Peggy.
