Hope, Poppy, Pippa....?

I like all of the above names but I don't love any of them. What other names fit in this category. I like the name Victoria but hate the nicknames Vicky, Tori etc but read Poppy is a nickname? I also prefer classic older names and none of the above fit this idea. Are my hormones all over the place to even think of them? I really like the simplicity of the name Hope and I don't know anyone of this name but DH thinks it fits into the bracket of names such as Winter, Willow etc and doesn't rate it at all. I also like the name Tess but it doesn't feel right as our surname is also four letters and longer names definitely suit it more or at least two syllables. I like the name Pippa but DP doesn't like the idea of our baby having the same name as Pippa Middleton (he is impossible!), the same for Imogen becaues of Imogen Thomas. Any suggestions anyone please?

Posy?

Not Pippa, what with its 'colourful' meanings in various languages, Greek (blowjob), Swedish (shag), Italian (wank).

I love Tess.

Thank you all again for your replies.

I've never heard of the name Posy? Its not the name for me but out of interest, is it short for something?

DH thinks Saskia is a Russian name but I like it. I like the name Maddie but would always be reminded of Madeline McCann. I'm not keen on Holly tbh. Corinne is ok but on another thread there was a name mentioned 'Cordelia' which I really like but fear it would be shortened to Delia means I wouldn't use it. Charlotte is nice, I could put up with the name Lottie I guess but it wouldn't be my preference to use the shortened version.

Callie was mentioned - is this short for Callista? What are MN's views of Zoe? Too boring?

I'm mixed about the name Elizabeth. The nn Bess was mentioned which reminds me of a cow. If DD2 is a 'big girl', Bess/Bessie would be cruel.

DD1 is Anna which I love. I want a name that can't be dated and one that isn't the 'current fashion' if you know what I mean?

Unfashionable/timeless names...

Sarah
Mary
Laura
Frances
Caroline
Catherine
Josephine
Bonnie
Miranda
Meredith
Juliet
Naomi
Louisa

Any good? Also agree Zoe fits into this category. Nice name.

I have considered Bonnie an awful lot recently but what if she isn't a bonny girl? I like Catherine but I know so many people who have called the daughters Kate or Katie that for a time, I started to actually wonder if it was obligatory! I'd opt for Zara over Sarah but I have mixed views about it. I think this is why I started to think about the name Zoe but is it too similar to Chloe. Is it the same 'type' of name? Chloe is popular around here (working class area) which turns me off it. That sounds terrible snobby of me and I apologise to all the mums of Chloe's because it is of course a very pretty name. I know though that where I live, it would be popular enough.

I don't love the other names on the list although very nice names.

I don't particularly want unfashionable names, rather names that aren't hugely popular really. I don't want her to be one of ten in the school type of thing. Also I don't want people to be able to date it.

When naming DD1 she was named as soon as I got a BFP. Why is it so hard this time? I have to love more than one name surely?

I'll give it another go (time on my hands!)

The name Anna makes me think of...

Nina
Rose/Rosa
Maria
Olive

Other random suggestions...

Viola
Theodora
Cora
Molly
Iris
Willa
Dorothea (Thea)

Anna and Juliet
Anna and Sophie
Anna and Zoe
Anna and Honor? they sound too similar.

(Anna - quite Russian I'd have thought, shame DH doesn't rate Saskia).

Chloe and Zoe are both ancient classical names. Chloe was hugely popular in the 80s & 90s but not Zoe so much. I think Zoe is a much nicer name. Chloe sounds like someone attempting to eat a third cream cracker.

I love your DDs name, OP, and would suggest Megan to go with it.

I really like Pippa and wanted it for DD however she was born same time as Kate and Wills engagement/wedding so I was worried it would 'take off'. As it happebs it hasnt and is now firmly at the top of a list for DD2. I never thought about it being a 'nickname' but then DD1 has a nickname as her 'real' name.

KittenofDoom Fri 26-Apr-13 19:55:05

Saskia is Dutch/German, not Russian. He is probably thinking of Sasha.

Cornelia is like Cordelia but avoids Delia.

I love Tamsin, but it's hardly "formal" as it was originally a pet form of Thomasina. (There's a Thomasina/Tamsin in Thomas Hardy's Return of the Native.)

Yika Fri 26-Apr-13 20:01:26

I also love Tamsin and have a family member called this.

How about Sasha or Coralie? (slightly random suggestions)

Yika Fri 26-Apr-13 20:02:08

Oh cross posted re Sasha.

Yika Fri 26-Apr-13 20:03:25

I love Zoe too. It means life and I find it a very affirming name.
