I love this name, probably because it comes with NO connotations. I don't know anyone called Arlo apart from Arlo Guthrie.

However, I know it has shot up in popularity recently and friends of mine who already have kids casually tell me they know 4 or 5 Arlos. I don't want to give DS a faddy name, so I'm trying to guage how popular it really is.

So - as in the title: how many kids do you know called Arlo and what are they like?

(second bonus question: what do you imagine Arlo to be like?)

I don't know anyone called Arlo.

In some parts of the country, people would probably assume it was "Harlow" and that you were in the habit of dropping your aitches. There are lots of young lads in this neck of the woods called "'arvey".

Faddy.

I don't know any, myself. If you're worried about popularity I suggest as an alternative Orlo. Not sure of meaning/provenance but it is the name of a character in a PG Wodehouse novel, so is definitely not a new invention.

yes my nephew is called Arlo.

I have never met him but knowing his parents he probably says 'Arl-ay'

Hmmmm Hello there everyone, but my name is ARLO, and I just found out my name's meaning is awesome and that it is famous somewhere in London, and I'm a filipino, which makes me really awesomer :D

I really like it but I think it is faddy. It seems to be climbing quickly, which puts me off it a bit. I'd be inclined to name my son Charles - way more popular but such a classic - and nickname him Arlo. I don't think it is too much of a stretch! xxx

I know 3, all from posh, slightly bohemian families, if that helps.
Siblings have similarly nice but unusual names.

None. It's probably a tiny bit too out there for me but not hugely so.

I think the newsreader Natasha Kaplinski named her son Arlo.

CurryChip Sun 07-Apr-13 22:29:14

Sorry that should be 2011

CurryChip Sun 07-Apr-13 22:28:55

In 2012 it was ranked at 281 so that was 158 boys named Arlo!

I used to know one, he'd be about 30 now. His parents were big Guthrie fans. He was very tall, very clever, searingly witty and a fabulous cook, but had a frightening temper.

Never met one and as a nanny/ preschool teacher I meet a lot of kids!

There are thousands of names that don't have any connotations...
Arlo is trying too hard to be cool not quite getting there.

Badvoc Sun 07-Apr-13 17:11:43

<feels a bit sad she knows that>

Badvoc Sun 07-Apr-13 17:10:55

It's aro in twilight, not Arlo.

I really like it and it's on my short list for dc4 (due today!)

I do reckon it will end up top 20 over the next few years though.
