I used to teach a Daan. He was a lovely little blonde, Dutch boy. To me it's a cool name.

I'd say Dan, probably. Although I might think it is a typo.

I would say tje sounds like the ch in the word chirrup iyswim.

DizziDoll Wed 20-Mar-13 23:02:48

It is a very obvious Dutch surname and we will at some point move back. The 'tje' ending is pronounced 'tya' but would only be used by us, not others.

Joke and Fokke - ha ha, hadn't thought of them. I have a Norwegian friend called Line. Her mother, who doesn't speak a word of English, was very confused when she took the tube in London on a visit.

or Fokke, Fokje

crunchbag Wed 20-Mar-13 22:52:51

The 'tje' sound just sounds funny in English.

more names, Joke, Kick, Ferry

Sorry, unless you have a very obviously dutch surname I would think it was a spelling mistake

Hechan Wed 20-Mar-13 22:50:55

Have you considered Fekke? grin

Welovegrapes Wed 20-Mar-13 22:50:23

What about Alex instead - same in both languages?

SanityClause Wed 20-Mar-13 22:49:24

I once met a German man, whose name was Volker, but when I heard it pronounced, it sounded like "fucker". I had to get him to spell it, for me!

'Daantje' would more than likely become the nickname. Our dd is called Fien and is referred to as Fientje most of the time, except when she is naughty.

DizziDoll Wed 20-Mar-13 22:46:29

'Dan' would be fine too, though we can't use that as the actual name as it means 'then' in Dutch.

For a giggle, here are some names we like in Dutch but had to eliminate immediately:

- Floor
- Ferre
- Bent

crunchbag Wed 20-Mar-13 22:45:11

You could try 'Daantje' wink

DizziDoll Wed 20-Mar-13 22:42:32

Darn - ok, that is not too bad. That is the pronunciation in Dutch too.
Thanks!

chickensaladagain Wed 20-Mar-13 22:40:51

I would be a heathen and pronounce it Dan unless told otherwise

CelticPromise Wed 20-Mar-13 22:40:29

I would ask wink but guessing I'd say Darn like darning needle, so a long ah sound.

Bumbolina Wed 20-Mar-13 22:40:27

I just see 'daan south'

FunnysInLaJardin Wed 20-Mar-13 22:40:21

Darn

HaDeHaDeHa Wed 20-Mar-13 22:39:24

Darn

Probably like Dan but with a Sarf London accent wink grin

SanityClause Wed 20-Mar-13 22:39:17

Darn.

We are still struggling to find names and are due in 6 weeks. It is starting to stress me out!!

We are Dutch speakers living in England and though we prefer a Dutch name (as the other 2 DC have a Dutch name as well), it has to be pronounceable in English.

So the front runners at the moment are:

Girl: Lotta (no problem with Pronunciation here)
Boy: Daan (the Dutch version of Dan). How would you pronounce it if you see it?
