Baby names

Florence, Maude, Mabel or Iris?

Ok, I have been back and forth on names for girls. This is my latest list. Not endorsed by DH although he has agreed that Florence and Mabel can be on the list. DS is George so I want it to have the same old-fashioned feel as George.

I know old-fashioned, granny names are not to everyone's taste but it is definitely my taste, so I would be grateful for your views on the names above. None are popular where I live. Maude and Mabel would raise eyebrows I suspect but this doesn't bother me in the slightest. Surname starts with "S" and so I think Iris might be tricky and Florence may also not flow as well. If I had my way, I would go with Maude but DH is currently saying no to this one although I am working on him.

Thanks!

Florence is lovely. That is favourite from your list. Mabel seems to be getting popular at the moment. Iris and Maude still rare. Personally I prefer Iris to Maude.

Bluestocking · 27/02/2013 07:40

I like Mabel best from your list.

nicelyneurotic · 27/02/2013 08:00

Iris and Mabel are the nicest

flossy101 · 27/02/2013 08:01

Iris
Florence
Mabel
Maude

In that order!

TobyLerone · 27/02/2013 08:03

I love them all. They were all on my lists for a baby girl 12 years ago and I was vetoed. DD got Iris as a middle name instead.

I know an Iris, Florence and Mabel and have a relative called Maud!

I like them all but in this order:-
Iris
Florence
Mabel
Maude

Have you considered Betsy, Olive, Agatha, Etta and Violet too? (know of all these)

emmyloo2 · 27/02/2013 08:06

Thanks everyone. TobyLerone, Maude and Iris are currently getting vetoed. Mabel is a "maybe". The only one DH likes is Florence. Men - they have such poor taste don't they??

I am currently wheeling out the "I have to be pregnant for 9 months and give birth" excuse to justify why I should get the deciding vote.

Cashmere - have considered Elizabeth (with nn Betsy). Olive was rejected by DH. I like Violet but it's a bit popular where we are from and it doesn't go with our surname very well.

Is Etta a nickname for something? I like that.

Oh I love Maude(e), but it was also vetoed here Sad.

Umlauf · 27/02/2013 09:00

DH loves Florence, I'm not so keen. I love love love Iris. I was at school with a beautiful Maude but she changed her name when she went to uni as she hated it so much :-( Mabel is nice too but not my favourite.

ceramicunicorn · 27/02/2013 09:11

My favourite is Maude too.

How about Winifred, Ursula, Flora, Ethel

telsa · 27/02/2013 09:19

Mabel is lovely. Etta gets used as a name on its own, but could be a nn for Henrietta, Georgette, Marietta, Claudette, Rosetta, Violetta, Loretta.
Betsy is really lovely.

hatsybatsy · 27/02/2013 09:22

friend has an etta who is just etta - think it does stand up quite well in its own right?

love all your names by the way.. am wondering whether hattie (harriet), connie (constance) and annabel might suit you?

hatsybatsy · 27/02/2013 09:23
