I like Max (however, DH does not so this thread is probably pointless). On the whole I prefer to put a traditional long name on the birth certificate but I am now sure with Max, all the long versions seem odd. What do people think?
What about Maxwell?
Sorry, I meant to put Maxwell in the title too. It is probably the most common long version. I am not sure about it though, it sounds odd to me, as do all the others.
The only one I like at all is Maxim but wasn't Maxim the nasty husband in Rebecca?
I think just Max on the birth certificate would be fine, it is a name in its own right.
If I had to choose a longer version I would go with Maximus.
I like Maxim best but yes he was in Rebecca (and is the name of a magazine!)
I'd go fo Maximillian, because I lik polysyllabic! Maxim is fine too.
I wouldn't choose Maximus, though, because I hear a silent 'gluteus"
I like Maximus.
I know a Maximilian and his parents insist it isn't shortened. it is a bit of a mouthful to say all day.
If DH does not come round to liking Max, what did he offer as alternatives? So we can have a good laugh. It's easy to knock a name, harder to think up another one.
Fwiw I like Max, considered it for DS, had the same dilemma regarding short for something else or Max in its own right. Ultimately chose something else but would have gone for Maxim.
Asking what DH likes is opening a can of worms in the most over thought through baby naming in history...
DH' shortlist: Ioan (Welsh, pronounced Yo-an), Reuben, Arthur, Jonathan.
My shortlist: William (nn Billy), Felix, Max, Alexander (nn Sacha).
If you are going to be calling him Max all the time anyway, why would you not just have Max on the BC? I'm not keen on any of the long versions myself though tbh, I think they all sound a bit pretentious, but Max is nice.
Love Reuben, Ioan and Alexander (and Sacha!) though.
What about Maxian?
I adore Sacha. It would have been my choice for DS if I was picking alone.
You are in good company in this Topic, some very heartfelt threads about not agreeing on anything often when baby is imminent or already here! Of course if you are adding to your family later on you could be generous let DH have a name from his list and then you'd definitely have voting power next time. If you have DCs already, who chose last time?
I think I remember a Sacha thread before. I love the name Alexander and I am warming to the name Jonathan (Jonny esp).
The Sacha thread was probably mine Donkeys. I had a Jonthan/Jonty/Jonny thread too. I warned you we were over thinking this.
There will be no more DCs. This is number three. Numbers one and two were girls and DH and I just agreed. Neither of us had to impose our will on the other. I am not sure how we could have such similar views on girls' names and such divergent views on boys' names.
Well you could have a Joker - a name you each write down, something different to anything you've already suggested - from your family tree, someone inspirational, a close childhood friend, a sportsman, an actor - no matter how off the wall, just tell each other one name each and see what the other thinks.
My DS is a Max, not a maxwell, Maximus or Maximillian just Max. That's the name we loved and that's what we called him.
Love the name Sacha for a boy. Maximilian is close to my heart. Everyone I know thinks its really cool, he is never called it unless he is being selectively ignorant or has been super cheeky.
We have a Max. We used a longer name on the birth and now wish we had just used Max as he has NEVER been called anything else !
The danger of having a longer version of the name you choose is that it will be used by the school, or by people who just read the name on a form. I have always been known as Meg, even though I am a Margaret. I remember getting in trouble at school for not answering when the register was called, as I didn't click it was me. Even now if I go to the hospital I have to really listen when patients names are announced. If I were you, I'd go for Max on the birth certificate.
Really like Max and know some lovely ones. Not keen on any of the longer versions and I think Max is enough of a name on its own. The longer forms seem too much to me.
I really really really want Max (Maxwell) for dc2. Unfortunately ds has spoiled it somewhat by naming the hamster Max...
I know too many dogs called Max , so it's a pet name for me ! Sorry x
