Would it be cruel?

I'm not actually pregnant yet so this is all a bit pie in the sky at the moment but we're TTC and I suddenly had the perfect name flash into my head if we were to have another boy. It is, I'll be the first to admit, a name which can be construed as a bit posh while myself and DH are anything but (16yr old Ford Fiesta, 1970s 3 bed semi in Wiltshire). And yet somehow it just sounds perfect. So, would it be cruel to call a boy who is going to go to a bog standard comprehensive and, if he takes after either myself or DH will not have the skills or strength to fend off bullies........

Hugo?

Brother of Thomas, 3 syllable surname beginning with B.

Be honest. I love love love it.

Cruel...? No, not at all.

Nice, solid name - but very popular these days.

Think it's fab!!

Goes perfectly with your surname, and with older brother's name smile one of my wee cousins is called Hugo, and he's ace, so I like the name anyway.

I adore Hugo and it was on our list if this baby was going to be a boy. I think it's fabulous.

Poppydaisy I mentioned the length of the surname so you could imagine the rhythm of the name, not because I think it's posh!

HelloKitty Thanks for the tip - do you think Hugo will be common soon then (I mean as in "well used" not chav!)

Patricia and BonaDea thank you, this is reassuring!

My lovely BiL is called Hugo. I like it!

PatriciaHolm Fri 08-Feb-13 12:30:49

I've got one ;-) so I love it!

Cool name, go for it!
Good luck with TTC

What is wrong with 'posh' confused? Seriously, I don't understand...?!

hellokitty123 Thu 07-Feb-13 13:02:18

How on earth can a 3 syllable surname be posher than a short one? Ours is only one syllable - is that chav then?

birdofthenorth Thu 07-Feb-13 10:37:32

I think of your 3 syllable surname beginning with B is Bullingdon then, yes, it would sound posh smile

hellokitty123 Thu 07-Feb-13 08:57:56

Most names considered 'posh' a few years ago - e.g. Hugo, Sebastian, Quentin - are now becoming more 'normal' as they are used more often. This trend of 'filtering down' is explained well in Freakonomics. So I think Hugo is fine and not cruel.

Hugo is quite popular in here in Spain and also France, we've met quite a few and they are real cheeky chappies, it's a lovely name.

My friend has a little boy called Hugo and he's lovely smile

It'll be your baby so if you like it, use it! Regardless of what anyone else thinks smile

Good luck ttc smile smile

Love it smile

I like it. Pictish I always think of Tarquin when I think of parodies of middle class parents and their horrid offspring, probably due to The Modern Parents in Viz!

I know a Hugo, he carries it off well, why follow the herd if you want something that is still uncommon?

almostanotherday Wed 06-Feb-13 20:03:34

Hugo is fine smile

Wishiwasanheiress Wed 06-Feb-13 19:58:32

Hugo no probs. Know several. All like to be known as "huge"... I agree, lovely name.

My friend has a Hugo.

I will admit it's not my favourite name on here, but it suits this DC so much and I think it will be one of those growing in popularity names.

I suggested Hugo for DS2 as I love it but DH vetoed it.

Gugglebum Wed 06-Feb-13 19:39:23

I love it, and would use it in a heartbeat if I did not have an odd one syllable surname also starting with H.
