hi, I need to find an arabic boys name that i like and everyone here can SAY. At the moment DH and i just roll around laughing at all his Abdulla/Amed/Osama/Hamdi/Mustafa/ sugestions!!!! I need to find something that will work here and in the Middle East!!
I liked Ali but there are 3 under 5's in his family called Ali.
We're not very religious but DH would not even concider anything but an arabic name, ( baby will have all his names as is traditional)

any Ideas?

thanks.... BUT they all just make me laugh! i just cant imagine calling my child ANY of them! I really want something that is a bit more cross cultural.

Hmm, shame you can't use Ali then, what about Sami, is that an Arabic name which sounds more western?

My DH has a 'foreign' first and surname (similar part of he world as OPs hubby). His English is perfect and has an MA in English literature.

Yes, he is still told that he speaks pretty good English when he goes on business trips to the States (as a first language, I should certainly hope so) and was asked if he did speak English. He refused point blank to any name for DS that would open him up to that nonsense. DSs name can translate very well in most places and no one - anywhere - has ever had a problem with it, or thought it odd.

I know a Hamza but he doesn't use it these days.

i have a normal english name and still get told i speak good english when i go to the states. some people are just not that good at foreign

Just saw this thread! I started a similar thread a month ago but have bumped it up to the top today! Maybe have a look there and see if there is anything you like.

He always suggests Muhammed we are on DS3!! Have had a girl name picked since I was expecting DS1!
He also suggested Abdoulie which is his best friends name and I am starting to get used to it but not sure how my family would take to that name.
Its so difficult!!

My sister was complimented on her good English in the states recently. That was after she told the, she was Scottish. It really isn't easy...

Anyway, names. I wouldn't go overtly religious (unless you are a particularly religious type) first name if you are not living in a religious country (as we didn't for DS). I suppose because we are a mixed family, it didn't seem 'fair' for the child to have a completely foreign name, as I am his mum and part of him/his culture too (does that make sense?). The very religious grandparents absolutely loved the name we chose and why we chose it (after a very very dear, late relative). All the family that emigrated to Canada/UK/US did the same. Their kids have pretty international names, as they are keen for them to feel that they 'belong' in their new country (not called a 'bloody foreigner' and asked if they speak the language, etc).

I like Sami though.

DH has ruled out Noah as apparently i can't say it properly!! friends in same situation have called their son Adam so thats out. Sami is in the running, one of his best friends at home is called sami. i also like Zac
