Posting on behalf of a friend.

She is 26 weeks pregnant with her first baby. It's a boy.

She LOVES the name Alex, it's been the one she has talked about from the start. However her DP's family have said no to Alex. Her DP's nephew is called Alex and even though they are on the other side of the world and unlikely to ever live in the same country they have given her massive stress over it.

So Alex is out.

She also likes Cho but DP has said no to that also.

Another name she has mentioned is Ian. She's not in love with it, it's just a nice name.

She is looking for other options and we thought here would be a good place to ask for ideas.

Her criteria are:

  1. It has to be a short name.
  2. It has to not end in an 'ee' sound (Like Alfie, Bertie)
  3. It has to be a name that works in other languages. She is Dutch, her DP is Catalan so must work in Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, English & Dutch.

    Any ideas welcome.

'must work in Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, English & Dutch.' Typo.

Should be 'must work in Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, English & French.'

Firstly I would say if her & DP like Alex go with Alex,it's not the extended family's choice!

What about Alec
Short names

Josh
Noah (my 2 favs, I have a Noah want a Josh next)

Yes, I think they should go with Alex, she loves it but her DP will get huge amounts of grief from his family so he has said no.

I totally forgot about Noah, she talked about that this evening, she likes it but DP's family have said here in Catalunya names that end with an 'a' sound are girls names. She pointed out Noah and his ark and he was a man and all that but they still got their knickers in a twist.

Liking Jake.

I agree the baby's name is up to two people, if they like Alex, Alex it is.
Or they could go with Sasha or some version of Alex.

If the family are in control of the name, which other parenting roles do they expect to be in charge of? I speak as one who renamed DS2 when DM hit the roof over his first name. Regrets? Too big a story for here, but i would think very carefully about where the boundaries are and whose child the baby is.

Some good suggestions thank you, please keep them coming.

The thing with Alex is that her DP isn't in love with the name like she is anyway. Add to that the hassle he will get from his family and that makes it a no-no for him. Obviously it has to be a name they both really like.

So far the names she is liking are Noah & Daniel, but up for other suggestions if you have any.

Thanks.

Firstly, they should stop telling the family what they're thinking; wait until the baby's born. They could choose Alexander, nn Sasha, which is international.
Daniel's good; Nicolas and Tomas are very international, too.
Carl
David
Jacob
Victor
Frank

If she likes Daniel she can have Gabriel or Michael (Mick, Mikey) also works internationally.
