Shampayne.

I kid you not. I had to ask the mother, WHY?

Oh poor thing.

Poor Mum, in a way, to be so very misguided.

Don't see the issue. My sister Lambrini loves that name

Grin at fanjo.

Is this another "lets all be superior and laugh at others choices" thread? Yawn.

i met a woman who told me her childrens names...she had a 4yo DD who's NN was Fanny and her given name was Fanjo...she was from the Philipines and it is a popular name there apparantly...but they live in the NW of england...i had a hard time with that nameGrin but her other children (older) all had traditional Philipino names aswell but "normal" sounding IYSWIM

some people only consider how the name sounds and what it means to them but not how it sounds and means to others IYSWIM doesnt make the name a bad one but just not suitable in some societies

You asked the mother why? What did she say?

You actually asked the mother why?

Gosh.

What did she reply?

I cannot ever imagine asking a parent for an explanation of their name choice btw!

ach you snobs, it is a lovely name. Wink

No, not to feel superior at all. The 'why' just came out. She had a good answer for me though 'eh why not, my daughter, my choice'.

Luckily Mum seems nice (I will be seeing her a lot more due to her involvement of something that I am invilved in) hope she forgives me.

We were in Canada on hols and on the slopes we heard a mum call her 5 year old son....

Dirty.

Not as an adjective either, it really was his name. I did wonder what it was shortened from.

I'm always getting asked for an explanation of my children's names. People always regret asking though, because I have about six in-depth and complicated reasons for picking the names of DS1 and DD1 and I always insist on listing all of them! Grin

I should point out that I did not call any of my children after an alcoholic drink though. Just in case you were wondering...

In all my years of teaching, my favourite was Chyna because mum liked the food & it sounds exotic. I giggled like crazy & so did she. I asked her why with a Y and she said 'to be fancy'. I think I hugged her.

always my daughter calls herself Boo for some reason. She talks in the third person a lot, "Boo loves you" that kind of thing! She's 9 btw! Fortunately it's just a nickname!

Well couldve been shampoo....so many great nn with that.

I'm struggling with Velvet, cause I can't see the problem...

But then dd has an 'unusual' name.

Velvet is nice. It reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor in the horse movie.
