Baby names

Arthur or Rory?

2 weeks and 2 days to go and still no name. We had settled on Arthur with a lot of help from all you lovely people once we realised that our chosen name (Felix) would result in the initials FU! But then 3 of my friends gave birth to baby boys within two weeks and they are ALL called Arthur (well one is George Arthur but still....) and it has made me panic....

So....
Should we still go with Arthur and just deal with the fact that it looks like it is becoming insanely popular OR shall we go with a name we literally only thought of this week...Rory. I love it and so does DH but I guess its just a bit of a curveball as we haven't had it on any longlists, shortlists etc. the whole way thorough so feels a bit...unfamiliar if that makes sense! Also, it will probably be very apt as it means red king and DH has red hair so it may well fit perfectly.

Other vague thoughts...Alexander (boring?), George (too popular?) Bertie (Love it but not sure about the long name...don't really like Albert, Herbert, Robert, Bertram etc.)

Oh also, just to say we wouldn't use any of the alternative Rory spellings/pronunciations (Ruaridh etc.) just because we have no Scottish or Irish roots really so would seem a bit silly.

Thanks so much in advance.

Rory. I like that one. I'm not a fan of Arthur at all.

I like both. Do you like Doctor Who?

I've just answered an Arthur question on another post.

Always Arthur.

I like them both, but as you know three Arthurs, I'd go for Rory. Reading your comment about your husband's colouring though, have you considered Rufus?

These were the exact two we narrowed it down to with DS! We've had Rory so you can have Arthur Wink

I prefer Rory.

Arthur is nice but as you say it's had a HUGE spike in popularity recently. I know lots of people don't care about that but I would and it sounds as though you do too.

Rory is a classic name but not overly common. Geek that I am I just checked the stats for both names in England and Wales. In 2011 586 Rorys were born v 961 Arthurs. I bet 2012 will show far more Arthurs than 961.

As I said on another thread tonight - I think Arthur is on the verge of being the new Alfie/Archie

Thanks so much for all your input. I know there is another Arthur thread running at the moment so I really appreciate you responding to mine as well! It seems that Rory is definitely the favourite so far....

Was going to suggest Rufus, as Allalone suggested. It means red hair apparently. Otherwise, I prefer Arthur, because the song Rory, the racing car is now stuck in my head?

Theres also Toby or Tobias. Rory is OK but not my taste.

George is very cute and cuddly yet manly and proper

Like Xander rather then Alex for nn

Like Gilbert - Bertie

Barney or Barnabas I adore

Arthur definitely.

Rory seems such a young name to me,though I know there must be many a grown Irish man with the name,it just seems a little boys name. I feel the same about Sophie being a young name, despite knowing lots of them the same age as myself.

I would love to use Arthur one day but it would cause so many arguments with my maternal side of the family it wouldn't be worth the hassle at all. My sadly deceased paternal grandfathers name you see. Maternal side would be offended as they would see it as honouring one grandfather and not the other.

Love Arthur - we won't use it because one of my best friends is an Arthur, but such a great name!
Rory is also lovely...
Don't think Alexander is boring - especially if you use Xander as suggested up thread.
do you really think the initials matter?

Don't like Rory. Just reminds me of Rory McGrath

Report
squoosh · 09/01/2013 16:38

Ick! If Rory McGrath was the only Rory you knew I can see why it wouldn't appeal.

I know lots of lovely Irish Rorys so can happily banish that creepy McGrath fella from my brain!
