I like it because its biblical as my ds name is also biblical. It also has a quirky British feel to it, which I love (though I'm not from Britain)! BUT I really dislike the name Gemma...which slightly puts me off and really is my only reservation about the name, as I'm afraid it will get shortened to this. If any of you have or know a Jemima, does this happen? Also what kind of reactions do you get to to the name? Oh and I don't mind the puddle duck associations
I love the name Jemima but DH vetoed it for DD. I think I even have started a thread about it when pg under by old username. Lots of people said Puddle duck IIRC, but I think it's beautiful.
Thanks for the comments lots to think about. I think it is rising to the top of the list!
Our friends daughter Jemima who is 11, recently wants to be known as Jam
Love it.
On my list for a future girl, dh not keen though, says it reminds him of a duck
Mulberrybush I also love Jemima but loathe Gemma
Love Jemima
I like it but Gemma is very pretty too and simpler. If you dislike Gemma then how can you like Jemima?
through the round window! i always think of the doll jemima from play school in the 80's or maybe thats just me showing my age! & i used 2 have a pet rabbit called jemima, cute name.just jem 4 short though
The Jemimas I know are Jem, Jam, Mimi, Mima
Never Gemma!
Friend has a Jemima, known as Mima, Jems or her full name. It is a gorgeous name.
Jemima is lovely, always reminds me of the little girl in chitty chitty bang bang (I think thats a nice thing lol). I agree theres a British quirkiness to it that you can't quite put your finger on. Classic, neither old-fashioned or modern, easy to pronouce and a one-way-to-spell-it name. Totally different from Gemma, don't worry. A good choice.
I know know two grown up jemimas, they known as mimi and Jem
I have a nine week old Jemima. Her 20 mo sister calls her Mima, so I do too by default. Or Jimjam.
Either way, it's a gorgeous name.
I also get the nn Jembolina which is quite nice and would work for Jemima.
Love it its gorgeous. I see Jemima and Gemma/Jemma as two separate names though I don't associate them at all.
gorgeous name
I know two small Jemimas. Both are known as Jemima; no shortening.
Like ellesabe my Jemima is shortened to Mima by DD1 (aged 2 and can't say Jemima yet) and DS calls her Jimmyima which I think is sweet. So Jimmy is also a possible nickname here too.
I have had some really lovely comments about her name and i really love it's quirkiness.
Lovely name - would never associate it with Gemma as a shortening.
I know a lovely little Jemima - in fact I know two.
It is a pretty name for a little girl and an elegant one for an adult, imo.
Neither is shortened to gemma. Mima when tiny which is cute.
I am a Gemma who sometimes gets called Jemima, but Ive never heard it go the other way around.
Jemima is a beautiful name and I would imagined be shortened to Jem. Mima / Mimi are also good nns.
I have a friend called Jemima who is nick named Mima or Jim. I think it's a lovely name.
I have a Jemima and LOVE her name, obviously!
Most of her little 2yo friends can't say 'Jemima' and call her Mima. Her best friend pronounces it Jemma (which I hate) and she calls herself Jima (which I love) but all adults call her Jemima so the nicknames will probably grow out over time.
Oh and I sometimes call her Jimmy when dh isn't listening
I hate the name Gemma to OP, I know a really spiteful horrible want to punch in the face kind of girl called Gemma and I know it's an assumption but everyone else I know called that has those same tendencies IMO. Jemima is lovely. Jemima rose would work really well to.
Francescarose do you think the name wears well on your colleague, as I know it would be adorable on a little girl but wonder about it on an adult?! Though Jemima Khan wears the name well!
