Baby names

If I like it, DP doesn't - and vice versa!

I am 24 weeks pregnant - we don't know whether it is a boy or a girl.

We already have two girls (Florence Amelie and Gabriella Eve) although neither of them had names until after they arrived.

I know lots of names I don't want to use - for a whole host of reasons, including but not limited to and in no particular order:

  • no alliteration (surname starts with 'L' and is 2 syllables)
  • no unisex names
  • no 'American sounding' names
  • no 'modern' names
  • not the name of a child/person we already know

I have Welsh/English heritage.
DP has Italian/English heritage.
We live in England.

Names I like (in no particular order):
Romilly
Hebe
Cece/Cecily
Iris
Edie/Edith
Agatha
Sylvie
Evan
Rex

Names DP likes:
Alice (his Nan's name)
Harry
Ethan

Other names suggested by DDs:
Molly
Jessica
Rosa/Rosie
Emma
Jack
Oliver
Sebastian

All ideas welcome... you can see that I have already given this a lot more thought than DP.

Thank you amck - I rather like Gregory but it is the surname of some friends of ours. I wonder whether Jessamy will grow on me... I think I rather like it and might mention it to DP but not sure about Jess/Jessie.

Actually, rather like Jesse for a boy but not sure about actually using it for a baby!

In Scotland we would have Gregor rather than Gregory - It was almost No1 sons name - sometimes I wish we had gone for it. It's a nice strong name.

What about Frederick, Miles, Austin or Crispin?

I quite like Jess I have to say, but you could always use May for short. I also like Celeste too.

I do like the name Gregor but worry that it is very Scottish and we live about as far south in England as is possible.

I also rather like Celeste - I am trying to see how it fits with our surname. Any ideas on how it might be shortened?

I also like Miles and think I will add it to the list.

I am not sure DP would go for Crispin...

Hmmm - your DP and DDs have better taste than you! Go with one of their choices!

Gregor is horrible and reminds me of the Kafka story where he wakes up as a giant insect!

Yes countrykitten but which one(s)?

I also don't want it to be known as Name/Initial by being one of several in the class...

Actually on a second look I like:
Iris
Sylvie
Hebe
Romilly
All very unusual and as a teacher I have not encountered any of them before - very lovely.

Cecily is a bit Ocsar Wilde and Edith a bit Downton.

Alice and Harry are both lovely names but I teach many of each. Don't like Ethan at all.
All of your DD's suggestions are very common names in the school I teach with Seb being the least common if you see what I mean.

So I apologise - if you are looking for unusual you are definitely in the right!

Ps - Rex is still an old slobbery Alsation's name!

I know a Celeste and it is never shortened as far as I know - She is one of the loveliest people I have ever met - also very pretty but you can't dislike her for it ;)

My son is Harry so naturally I love the name.
Martha?
Darcey?
These are the names of my dd's
Alice I like very much so simple and classic
Emma is a lovely lovely name but very common so would be opposed even though i know Darcey and Harry are popular to but we still love them.
Danielle? ... Quite similar to Gabriella though.
Louise
Katie
Rachel
Holly
Yasmin
Jasmine
Matilda
Bethany
Samuel
Finley
Brian

Of your names, I really like Edie (not Edith though) and Iris.

I'm a teacher and totally understand you not wanting your child to have a common name. While your husband and DDs have perfectly fine taste in names, they're 10 a penny. Choose something with a different edge to it.

Harrysmummy, Darcey is a lovely name! However, did you really just suggest Brian to the OP as a potential baby name...come and meet baby Brian?! Also Danielle is a bit page 3 girl imo.

Harrysmummysarah1 · 01/01/2013 17:52

I've always liked the name Brian. Just personal taste I suppose.
I properly would of called my son it if dh had agreed but he vetoed it.
I get what your saying about Danielle it is a bit page threey I still think its a lovely name though :) perhaps because my sons middle name is Daniel .

Harrysmummy - Daniel is a really lovely name and quite unusual these days. My best friend was called Daniel and I used to sing the Elton John song to him (sad I know). Still not keen on the girl version of it though.

Countrykitten - thank you for further comments. I too am a teacher and whilst the names listed by DP and DDs are generally all good choices, I too have taught/am teaching many of them, often with multiples in the same class.

I also like names like Olivia, Lily and Lucy but again, they have become so popular ( and there is the alliteration factor).

I agree - Rex could be a dog's name in the same way that Felix belongs to the cats! DP just thinks of dinosaur when I mention it!

Of the new names suggested, I am definitely going to bring up Celeste and see what DP thinks. I also imagine he might like names like Martha, Matilda and Finley, all of which I could probably agree with.

Danielle/Daniel seems a bit too much like Gabriella I think.

Am considering Alice as a discussion for middle name if a girl.

Florence, Gabriella and Celeste sounds lovely :)

or Florence, Gabriella and Miles.....or what about Piers for a boy?

Report

One reason not to - Piers Morgan....Shock

country, if we all went around only using names that famous people didn't have then there wouldn't be a lot of choice would there?

Seems to be that you spend a lot of time criticising others suggestions on someone else's thread and not really contributing much yourself.

Maybe you should share your wisdom with some lovely names for the OP?

Report
Dysgu · 01/01/2013 20:17

I must say that my first thought was 'Piers Morgan' too but then I told myself that the name would become the child's name once it was attached. I have only ever known one other Piers - although am rather partial to Pierce Bronson Grin

amck I think you are being rather unreasonable here as I have tried to be helpful to the OP which you would know if you had read my posts and to make a lighthearted comment about Piers Morgan is not out of order is it really? You like the names Gregor and Piers- I don't - and there is no accounting for taste is there? Never mind - I am learning that people do not always have much of a sense of humour on here. Enjoy your evening being dour.

amck5700 · 01/01/2013 20:35

Country - there's helpful and helpful - I couldn't honestly give a rat's arse whether we like the same names or not, but you have criticised everything that anyone else has said without contributing any suggestions yourself - if it was meant to come across in a joking fashion, it doesn't - hope that helps?

OP - I know a lovely young Piers with a sister Gabrielle which is why I suggested it. I actually thought about Pierce but thought that may be a bit too modern with your other names....and Piers seemed a bit more exotic given the varied background of yourself and your OH.
