Hi my husband and I like Oliver for a boy and Lydia for a girl and were both pretty happy with our choices but now whenever I say Lydia he says Clamydia! He's only messing about and says he still loves the name but i cant get the association out my head now. Do you think its likely our daughter would grt cruelly nnicknamed at school?

I love the name Lydia. I can't help on the nickname though, it wouldn't occur to me but children can find anything to be mean about - I remember namecalling including "Sam Sam the dirty old man"; "Ginette - the best a man can get"; "Smelly Shelley" and "Charlotte the Harlot" so I think there are few names that kids can't do something with.

The only thing about Lydia is it always makes me think of the naughty daughter in pride and prejudice who ran off with wickham...

But maybe that's just me

Lovely, but I did think Chlamydia but that might be because of my line of work, sorry!

Or
Laurel
Alesha
Alicia
Lucinda/Lucia
Lauren
Layla/Leila
Georgia
Felicity
Verity

For some reason the above sound similar to Lydia to my pregnant brain!

My name is Lydia, and I've never had the Chlamydia association not to my face anyway I always was and still am very fond of my name. Have always been the only one at school, work etc. I think I was named after the 'Love for Lydia' book IIRC

Lydia is always followed by teapot in my head I'm afraid. It seems a little stuffy and pompous to me.

I like it and would never have thought of chlamydia until seeing it here on mumsnet!

I used to have manager called Lydia.
"Lydia,Lydia, how can we get rid of her"

I love Verity.

Kids will always find something to tease a kid about if they want to.

I have one. It really suits her and is lovely. As a teacher, I never encountered a child being teased for their name. There are many many different names and dc just accept them.

I think its a lovely name and wouldnt have thought of that link until seeing it on here - now its with me forever! If you love it then go for it, as others have said, people will always come up with names for you whatever your name may be

I have heard that stupid chlamydia thing before, but do not link it with my dd and nor does anyone else! There are lots of names you could twist if you chose to do so.

I think it is lovely. The chlamidia thing never occurred to me.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I feel a bit better now that most of you have said that you hadn't heard the association! I think we will stick with Lydia.

DD2 is Lydia ( and I still love it!) and we haven't yet had any nasty nn. (Her nn at home is Lula)
We also have an Annabelle and sdhe's already been called Smelly Belly by her dsis's (she's known as Belle). Kids can find something unpleasant with the nicest least offensive names.

Am I the only one who immediately starts to sing "Lydia oh Lydia, Oh have you met Lydia? Lydia the tattooed lady."?

No, ginmakesitallok, you are not the only one. In a Kermit voice?! And yet, I still love the name and if I ever get round to DC2 and it's a girl, then that's what I would like to call her.....
