Bump has been nn Horatio, but not sure about it as it's quite a mouthful with no sensible shortenings. However we are now struggling to come up with something similar as we

A - don't agree on anything
B - have a very common surname so are hoping to avoid anything in the top 10 at least

I like Arthur, Dorian, Edward - (we cant use this one), you get the idea

I really like Nimrod but everyone is a bit Hmm as am I, but I still like it!

Alternatives gratefully considered or any suggestions for nn/shortenings for Horatio

Horace??
Harry??

rachel234 · 12/12/2012 06:54

I think Horatio is a great name. Cool, classic and not overused. I wouldn't shorten it but Harry is an obvious option.

We have a Quentin so love that Smile, but I also like Arthur, Dorian and Raphael very much. Or how about Fabian, Tristan, Eric, Thaddeus or Cassius?

If you're after an underused name (especially with a common surname) you probably won't want to shorten Horatio to Harry, THE most popular boys' name.

priscilla101 · 12/12/2012 12:38

Ned?

BlueChampagne · 12/12/2012 13:04

Conrad

seeker · 12/12/2012 13:05

Patrick. Sorted!

FirstPersonPlural · 12/12/2012 13:10

I really like Horatio. You could use the nn 'Ray' or 'T' (which would no doubt then turn into 'Mr. T' - a most awesome nn for a little boy!)

Raphael, Cassius and Hamish are also lovely names that have been mentioned.

badtime · 12/12/2012 13:17

Horatio from CSI gets called 'H'.

Penguinbeaver · 12/12/2012 13:18

Seth

shoobidoo · 12/12/2012 13:36

I think Horatio is rolls off the tongue easily so don't think it needs a nickname.

Really like the suggestions of Quentin, Dominic and Marcus or how about Constantine, Casper or Aneurin?

Bluestocking · 12/12/2012 13:41

John. When was the last time you met a baby John?

Leafmould · 12/12/2012 13:45

Grigor

forgetmenots · 12/12/2012 13:45

I got overwhelmingly nice feedback about Angus on my thread! (Admittedly I am in Scotland!)

What about Phinnaeus, Hector, Clarence, Laurence - or for Shakespearean links, Banquo, Benedict (kind of..!), Aeneas, Sebastian,Ferdinand, Balthasar, Corin, Edgar, Orlando?

sipper · 12/12/2012 13:51

I LOVE Emerson

Emerson

(Was going to use it but had three DD's!)

smable · 12/12/2012 15:53

I would shorten Horatio to Tio ( tee-o ) otherwise Bruno is the best boys name ever

Bearandcub · 12/12/2012 15:59

Adolf

shoobidoo · 12/12/2012 17:04

I think there is a reason why Adolf should remain unusual for a long time....Alfred or Arthur, on the other hand, are lovely.

MadSleighLady · 12/12/2012 17:35

Nelson? Grin

Elsewhere in the Hs I quite like Hereward (Herry) at the moment.

We had a kitten called Horatio which we shortened to Ray.

The youngest in the Treasure Seekers was Horatio shortened to H.O. I think.

Not that helpful. Was trying to remember the other Treasure Seekers for potential classic names but they were Oswald, Dickie and Noel so perhaps not that great. And Albert Next Door.

shoobidoo · 12/12/2012 18:48

Horatio shortened to Ray is a great idea! I'd avoid shortening to Harry as there are so many already!

seeker · 12/12/2012 18:53

Shoo idol- you did notice that the person named Horatio shortened to Ray was a kitten , didn't you?
